iPhone Game Review: Super Newtronic

Break out your iPhone and prepare to tear down the walls of classic brick-breakers as Super Newtronic sets a new standard for the physics behind such games.

First of all, I have one crucial caveat: DO THE TUTORIAL! I tried playing this game just assuming I would catch on due to my years of other brick-breakers and was sorely disappointed to the degree that I stopped trying after about ten minutes out of frustration.  After I did the tutorial, I had the skills I needed to succeed at Super Newtronic, and you will too.

Gameplay

Super Newtronic differs from other brick breakers in two ways, the aforementioned advanced physics, meaning the ball slows down unless acted on by an outside force and is subject to friction and realistic gravity, and it also differs because you don't have a Pong paddle.  I know, scary. What you do have are two tools: Tap explosions (hold for larger explosions) and finger-drag force fields.  The force fields fade and disappear after a short time, so keep that in mind for your next volley.  Another consideration is that whether you're using explosions or force fields, you only have a limited amount of energy.  While it continuously replenishes, you can run out quickly if you mismanage it and just scribble your finger all over the map.

Super Newtronic has two modes: Arcade and Challenge.  Arcade Mode is what you might expect: an endless supply of levels until you run out of balls.  Challenge Mode consists of stay-alive timed events and and these give you more of a chance to catch your breath after each level.

ComicsOnline gives Super Newtronic 3.5 out of 5 Vauses.
