The Tuesday Top Ten: Summer Blu-ray Releases

Welcome to the ComicsOnline Tuesday Top Ten!  I'll pick the best of what’s out there each week and tell you about it.  This week we’re highlighting the top ten summer 2010 Blu-ray releases.  So without further ado…

10) BBC Earth: Life (June 1st)

This incredible follow up to BBC’s Planet Earth series offer some of the best cinematography to date and dives into how all living beings continue to strive.  Nature has never looked so good in this awesome high-def collection.  Filmed across a four year span and featuring over nine hours of footage, Life is not just a documentary, it’s an experience.

9) The Book of Eli (July 15th)

This surprise film offers a unique take on the end of the world mixing religious undertones with brutal action.  The Book of Eli offered some of the best post-apocalyptic visuals I’ve ever seen in the theatre and the Blu-ray version should bring home an even better picture.  Couple those visuals with an intense action packed story along with the very sexy Mila Kunis and you’ve got a summer winner.

8) From Paris With Love (June 8th)

From Paris With Love offers a solid summer movie experience, blending intense action, intrigue and comedy in one sweet package.  The director of this film, Pierre Morel, was the same man behind Taken and fans of that incredible film will certainly fall in love here. If that isn’t enough for you, this Blu-ray has a great high-def transfer along with an awesome list of watch-worthy special features including a real-world look at how the CIA operates.

7) Darkman (June 15th)

This 1990 original directed by the B movie master Sam Raimi finally gets some sweet high-def treatment.  If Universal does this one justice, we can expect a great transfer and some worthy special features.  Besides all that, seeing Liam Neeson kick ass again is worth the price of admission alone.

6) The Crazies (June 29th)

This awesome re-take on the zombie flick hit theatres and surprised (and scared) the hell out of those who purchased a ticket.  Offering plenty of classic scares mixed with psychological ones, The Crazies is one film any horror fan will enjoy.

5) Predator (Ultimate Hunter Edition) (June 29th

To make up for the dismal original Blu-ray release of this classic sci-fi film, Fox Home Entertainment is double-dipping this one a few weeks before the new Predators hits theatres.  Fans of the 1987 original will be happy to hear that this version promises a better transfer, better sound and a slew of new bonus features.

4) Flash Gordon (June 15th)

Flash, FlaaaAAAsh! Do I really need to say anything else?  The bad-ass 1980 original finally hits Blu on June 15th and my fingers are crossed that this version offers an awesome transfer.  If Universal gives this classic the same treatment as its other high caliber classic titles, we can look forward to a host of great special features that will keep fans watching this one til' Christmas.  I can’t wait to relive my childhood memories of this film, in high def.

3)Batman: Under The Red Hood (July 27th)

The eighth release in the amazing DC Universe animated series features a new full length feature film based solely on the Dark Knight.  Created from the Batman: Under the Hood and the Batman: A Death in the Family storylines, expect to see all your favorite supporting characters and villains.  If Warner Bros' last DC Universe release of Justice League Crisis on Two Earths provides any indication of the quality we can expect from Under the Red Hood, animation fans are in for a treat.

2) Lost the Complete Series (August 24th)

Following the recent finale, Disney wasted no time in announcing the upcoming release of this amazing collection.  Featuring all six seasons and extras in high-def along with an airplane load of new material exclusive to this collection, this sweet set should find its way into any fans' library.  Not only that, it features a Special Edition collectible ‘Senet’ game that was seen in season six, a custom LOST island replica, an exclusive episode guide, a collectible ankh and a black light penlight. Whew. Pre-order it now 'cause I’m sure there will be limited quantities available.

1) Evil Dead (August 31st)

Before Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell became household names (at least in my house), they both kick started their careers with this awesome film.  Big props to Anchor Bay for finally bringing what is easily the biggest B movie classic of all time to the house of Blu. Details are minor at this point, but if we’re given a great transfer with a sweet collection of extras, this could be the biggest release of the summer.  I’ll swallow your soul!!!
