The Tuesday Top Ten: Video Games You Should Have Already Played This Year

Welcome to the ComicsOnline Tuesday Top Ten!  I’ll pick the best of what’s out there each week and tell you about it.  This week we’re highlighting the top ten video games you should have already played this year.  So without further ado…

10) The Misadventures of Mr. P.B. Winterbottom (PC, Xbox Live Arcade, Feb 17th)

Mr. P.B. Winterbottom is a very hungry man and his food of choice is pies.  Your job is to use his unique ability to replicate himself in order to get him the pies he so craves, allowing players to create multiple copies of P.B. that can be stacked, lined up and made to walk back and forth to assist him in his task.  Winterbottom features a unique graphic style that’s presented in a black and white style similar to early 1900’s silent films complete with the same campy music and dialogue cards used years ago.  All of this combined offers an incredible experience unlike anything you’ve played before.

) 3D Dot Game Heroes (PS3, May 11th)

Featuring an old-school graphical style similar to the top-down adventure games from the Super Nintendo, Heroes allows players to design their characters and then roam the land, collecting orbs from six different dungeons in order to rid the land of an evil bishop. It feels incredibly similar to the Zelda series on the NES and Super NES and if you’ve forgotten how awesome those were, go play them again.  Fans of quirky adventure games will love what 3D Dot Game Heroes offers.

8) Mega Man 10 (PSN, Xbox Live Arcade, Wii Ware, Mar 31st)

With last year’s release of Mega Man 9, Capcom decided to take a step back graphically and return to its old-school roots. The same simple game play you’ve loved for years returns in a simple, incredibly hard format that longstanding fans of the series will continue to adore.  Long live classic side scrollers!

7
) Red Steel 2 (Wii, March 23rd)

The mixing-spaghetti-western-themes-with-swordplay was an awesome idea and Ubisoft pulled it off.  Following the dismal performance of the first game, Red Steel 2 uses the new Wii Motion Plus accessory to offer far superior controls and a much better experience.  It’s exactly how a game of this caliber should play on the Wii and since its release, nothing has come along to compete with it.

6) Perfect Dark (Xbox Live Arcade, Mar 17th)

This classic N64 game by Rare makes its way over to the Xbox Live arcade with improved visuals, controls and a more robust multiplayer experience.  It’s a classic game that should belong in everyone’s library and this version is the best one available.

5)Bioshock 2 (PS3, Xbox 360, Feb 9th)

The underwater city of Rapture is an amazing place to explore.  Featuring a 50’s era dystopia gone mad with huge skyscrapers on the bottom of the sea, Bioshock 2 must be seen to be believed.  This time, players return to the underwater city of Rapture in the form of a Big Daddy. Mixing a new single player story with new multiplayer modes, Bioshock 2 is an awesome follow up to one of the greatest games ever made.

4) Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars(Wii, Jan 26th)

Fans of Capcom’s previous VS series should feel right at home here, but for those who haven’t played it yet, it has an easy to pick up and hard-to-master game play that should appeal to all types of players.  Mixing the A-list of Capcom fighters with the Tatsunoko universe is a unique idea and makes for one the most entertaining and crazy fighting games available.  For more information, check out my full review here.

3)Darksiders (PS3, Xbox 360, Jan 5th)

The Apocalypse has started early and the 1st horseman, War, has arrived on the scene to investigate the cause. The premature battle between Heaven and Hell has decimated Earth long before they stood a chance.  War, having been framed for the cause of the end, must discover who pulled the trigger early and right this terrible wrong.  Featuring incredible artwork created by comic legend Joe Madureira and game play similar to the next-gen Zelda series, Darksiders should not be missed.

2) God of War III (PS3, Mar 16th)

This finale in the Kratos saga has everything you loved about the previous two and more.  Not only does the amazing combat return, God of War III features arguably the best looking graphics on the console to date. On top of that, this dark and bloody story of revenge is one that any mature gamer should see to the end.  If you’re a fan of epic boss battles, you’ll find the best here; the first battle with Poseidon is one of the best and it only gets better after that. This is one ending to an amazing trilogy you don’t want to miss.

1) Mass Effect 2 (Xbox 360, Jan 19th)

Bioware’s epic space RPG returned for a second round with critical and commercial success. Everything you loved about the first game returned and everything you didn’t was left on the development floor.  Commander Shepard returns once again to face a new threat and must gather a crew to face it.  Combining amazing graphics, the classic Bioware formula and an amazing story, Mass Effect 2 is arguably the best game available on the Xbox 360.
