The Tuesday Top Ten: Movies to look forward to this year.

Welcome to the ComicsOnline Tuesday Top Ten!  I’ll pick the best of what’s out there each week and tell you about it.  This week we’re highlighting the top ten movies to look forward to this year.  You don't want to miss these.

10) The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader (Dec 10th)

The children return once more to Narnia and join Prince Caspian (now king) aboard the Dawn Treader as they travel to the end of the world.  I can’t reveal anything about the plot that the amazing C.S. Lewis classic hasn’t already done far better, but I feel that this book was one of the more fantastical of the series.  With Fox at the helm instead of Disney and Michael Apted as the new director on board, I hope we can expect a version more representative of the novel.

9) Life as We Know it (Oct 8th)

I couldn’t make a movie top ten without having a romantic comedy on it.  In what feels like a follow up to various parenting comedies like Knocked Up and the recently released  The Back-up Plan, Life as We Know It matches superstars Josh Duhamel and Katherine Heigl in what could be a better on-screen match that either of their previous comedic roles.  After a tragedy kills a pair of mutual friends, Eric (Duhamel) and Holly (Heigl) become the sole providers for their friend’s newly orphaned daughter.  Both single and unprepared, they will have to learn to cope with each other in order to raise the girl, and probably hook up at some point.

8
) Megamind (Nov 5th)

It’s pretty sad that I’m more excited about Will Ferrell doing voiceover work than I am seeing him in a live-action role.  Regardless, Megamind looks to put a spin on the classic superhero VS super villain formula.  Once Megamind finally destroys his arch nemesis, his life becomes boring and dull.  To bring back the excitement, he creates a new enemy that quickly plans to destroy the world.  Not content with being second best, he must turn his villainy into heroics in order to save the world.  With the trailer showing off a number of incredibly funny parts, I expect the rest of the film will be just as hilarious.  To top it all off, Dreamworks Animation is responsible for this one, so the quality of animation should be on par with the latest Shrek film.

7
) Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World (Aug 13th)

Named after the first issue of the comic book series by Bryan Lee O’Malley, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World looks to capture much of the craziness of the source material.  Scott is a 23-year-old bass player in a crap band who lives in a single bedroom apartment with his gay roommate Wallace.  He has no real direction in life and until he falls in love with hottie Ramona Flowers.  Problem is, in order to be with her, he must defeat her seven evil ex-boyfriends.  The premise is about as crazy and silly and you could expect, but the comics rocked and if the film can capture any part of that, we’re in for a treat.

6
) Machete (Sept 3rd)

The long awaited Planet Terror spin off is finally upon us!  I’m thankful Robert Rodriguez saw fit to bring this side character on for a whole new adventure.  Word is, if this does well, we might get a trilogy out of the deal.  When the organization Machete (Danny Trejo) works for betrays him, he puts foot to ass – or knife to throat, in his case – on a quest for vengeance.  With a cast including Robert De Niro, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, Rose McGowan, Steven Seagal, Cheech Marin and even Lindsay Lohan, Machete is definitely worth a look.

There was no trailer available that I could display here that would be suitable for all ages.

5)Resident Evil: Afterlife (Sept 10th)

In addition to the return of Milla Jovovich as Alice, Ali Larter is returning as Claire, Wentworth Miller is playing Chris Redfield and bad ass Albert Wesker is finally showing up in the film series, played by Shawn Roberts.  Afterlife looks to borrow themes from the fourth and fifth games while continuing the separate storyline from the previous three movies.  Some initial pics showing off the Executioner Majini from RE5 look incredible.  This time, Alice is heading to Los Angeles after hearing rumors that it might actually be a safe haven for T-Virus survivors. With a better cast and more action, Afterlife looks like it could be the best Resident Evil film to date.

4
) Tron: Legacy (Dec 17th)

The fact that Disney is attached to this film scares the crap out of me.  What could possibly be an incredible sequel to the original might be ruined by Disney’s G-rated standards.  The cast looks strong with Jeff Bridges, Olivia Wilde, James Frain and Garret Hedlund from on board. The special effects in the early trailers look incredible and could potentially shake Avatar off its throne for level of technical excellence.  I’m going to cross my fingers on this one, but it has the potential to be amazing.

3
)Due Date (Nov 5th)

Todd Philips returns once more to make comedic gold with Due Date.  Mixing the unlikely pairing of Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis together could be the best thing since mixing Robert Downey Jr. with Jude Law in Sherlock Holmes.  Both must ride together on a road trip so Peter (Downey Jr.) can make it to his new child’s birth on time.  I don’t expect the raunchiness of The Hangover, but Due Date will be awesome.

There is no trailer available as of this posting.

2) The Expendables (Aug 13th)

The synopsis is a simple one.  A group of mercenaries head down to South America in order to end a dictator’s regime.  What this really means is the largest collection of action-movie bad asses have gathered on screen for what might end up being the apocalypse of awesomeness.  Plot be damned, with a cast comprised of Sly Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Randy Couture, Bruce Willis, Steve Austin and Mickey Rourke, there’s enough testosterone to impress anyone. I can’t wait to see how this one is going to turn out.

1) Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part one (Nov 19th)

I’m a huge Harry Potter fan and it’s no surprise that this made #1 on films I’m looking forward to this year.  After recently witnessing the nerdgasm-inducing trailer of both the first and second part, no movie has me more excited this year than the latest in the Harry Potter series.  I was initially pissed about Warner Bros milking the 7th book and optioning two movies, but there are far more action sequences throughout that I think returning director David Yates could do a great job with.  This will rock and certainly destroy the competition at the box office.

There you have it, the top ten movies to look forward to this year
