Blu-ray Review: Battlestar Galactica Season Three

By Season Three, the reimagining of Battlestar Galactica had already turned into a revolution. Battlestar Galactica fully cemented the darker tone in sci-fi that had been milling about for a decade, and proved that the “shaky cam” was a viable filming technique. Two years had passed since the controversy over the gender switches of Starbuck and Boomer. The critics had responded to the quality of writing and the brave choices. The fans were enthralled by the CGI effects and the performances of the cast. The show has gone from the subject of genocide to the topic of the black market. Nothing was off limits for this series. SyFy Channel was quick to release the DVD sets right before the start of the next season. Now Battlestar Galactica – Season Three is available for you to own on Blu-ray!

Episode Highlights:

"Exodus, Parts 1&2": Galactica and Pegasus return to rescue the inhabitants of New Caprica from Cylon imposed rule. This episode stands out more so than the others because we are shown our heroes committing acts of terrorism while struggling for freedom. Sacrifices will be made and the Colonial Fleet will never be the same.

"The Woman King": Civilians are now living on the starboard hangar deck of the Galactica, and a disease breaks out. The doctor treating the civilians has decided who lives and who dies. This episode stands out because of the bravery of the writers to have a character actually take the lives of an entire group of people into his hands. It’s one doctor’s decision that genocide benefits the greater good.

"Dirty Hands": The refinery ship in the fleet starts producing fuel with impurities in a revolt against the way that the society and government works. We watch as one ship decides to take on the fleet in the only way it knows how. We get to see how one idea, one book starts to foment into a realization that something is wrong with society, and how the ruling government deals with this set of events.

"The Son Also Rises": The trial of Baltar is being organized, and his new counsel has arrived. Lee Adama is appointed security, starts assisting Baltar’s replacement counsel, and starts questioning his place in this new society. This episode stands out because of the character building they did to Apollo in this episode. Lee grows beyond being in his father’s shadow, and finds a place in the sun all of his own.

"Crossroads, Parts 1& 2": Baltar’s trial is underway, and four members of the fleet are beginning to find their destiny. This episode stands out, because we finally get to know who four of the final five are, and we see what justice looks like after what is basically a second apocalypse for these people.

Overall:
This new Blu-ray release of Battlestar Galactica Season Three is just as good as its predecessors. Since the show was shot in HD, fans are truly able to enjoy the series at its best. It is also important to note how big of a difference the jump from DVD to Blu-ray is in terms of visuals for BSG. I had purchased the DVD releases when they came out originally, but after watching the end of the series in HD, I became a believer in the Blu-ray experience.
