NYCC 2010: Marvel: Welcome to The X-Men Panel

Details of this panel were collected by Correspondent Mike Devaney and posted by T.

Marvel rolled out a big group of editors and writers to discuss the upcoming developments in the X-books

The event was MC’d by Marvel Sales Manager Arune Singh

On hand were:
Jeannie Schaefer; Editor of Wolverine
Axel Alonso;  Editor
C.B Cebulski; Marvel’s Talent Manager
Peter David; Writer
Marjorie Liu; Writer
Rick Remender; Writer
Kieron Gillen; Writer
Jason Aaron; Writer
Mike Carey; Writer

Kieron Gillen will be joining Matt Fraction on Uncanny X-Men 531.

There will be crossover between 3 annuals: Uncanny X-Men, Steve Rogers and Namor.

Wolverine & Jubilee will be getting a Limited Series in January and we should expect Jubilee to be “A little changed” after the current Vampire arc concludes.

The X-Men will be returning to Manhattan to integrate with the other Marvel heroes. This will happen in a story line called “Serve and Protect”. This will serve as a way of integrating the characters for a crossover that is involving them and the rest of the Marvel Heroes down the road.

They talked a little about Generation Hope but nothing new or interesting was said. It was essentially said to be a New Generation X.

Wolverine going to Hell is only the beginning. In issue 4 we will see demonically possessed Wolverine versus Colossus.Scott Summers has a plan to deal with Demon Wolverine.

X-23 will be leaving the X-Men to find herself and she’ll be on the road with Gambit.

Daken will be trying to Consolidate Power. He will form an alliance with Mystique.

Wolverine and Hercules will be a series following the Drinking Buddies launching in March 2011.

The X-Force digital video was shown and the first mission to kill Apocalypse was featured.

X-Factor will meet up with Thor..

An upcoming story will answer how X-Factor’s been allowed to operate in New York City under the Mayoral rule of J. Jonah Jameson. He will be calling in a favor and having them take on a case for him.

Expect some real world issues to be explored including

High school Suicide
Bullying
Monet  life as a Muslim

“Rise of the New Mutants” will follow “Fall of the New Mutants”

“The team will be torn apart by Fall of the New Mutants!”

X-Men Legacy will deal with the repair of San Francisco in a story line called “Fables of Resurrection” led be Cyclops.

They teased an upcoming story line called Age of X which featured silhouetted figures like the Avengers teasers of a few months ago.

Fans started asking questions and the first one out of the gate did not seem to like Remener’s Franken-Castle story line for Punisher. Another fan wanted to understand why the characters do not seem to be seeing Hope’s similarities to Jean Grey. He was told that the characters are asking themselves the same questions the readers are asking. Another wanted to know if we’d see Havok again? He was told he could not answer that now.

Another fan wanted to know if we would ever see the issue of Jamie Madrox not being a traditional mutant being dealt with within his lifetime and he was essentially told he’d see that dealt with by issue 228.

A fan wanted to know if Marvel plans to lower price of comics to $2.99 like DC. Peter David seemed agitated and asked if the same fans who wished for the lower cost comics were prepared to see their comic shops go out of business. He stated that as the cost of retailers go up so to must the cost of products.

Alonzo jumped in and essentially said lots of new books will be shipping with $2.99 cover prices and that a fair statement could not been made about what Marvel is doing versus what DC is doing.

Hmmmm…I have a feeling we’ll be hearing a lot of Marvel’s reactions to DC’s pricing plans this weekend. It may not be the big Movie news story people were looking for at a con but it may be the most important issue for comics fans. How much does my habit have to cost? Will lower prices allow me to buy more books weekly? I think so. So long as the books are good.

I mean seriously multiple silly Deadpool books was funny for a bit… but the jokes over can we please get back to good storytelling, great artwork and geekdom on a budget? One can hope.
