DVD Review: The Superhero Squad Show: Quest for the Infinity Sword- Volume 3

Hero up, Squaddies!

By Morgan Barrett

The Superhero Squad Show  is an action-packed, family-friendly show (with a kick-ass theme song) full of Marvel’s classic superheroes and villains. In Volume 3 (now available on DVD), the greatest heroes unite in search of the missing fragments of the Infinity Sword. The show is full of nutty characters and witty humor as the world’s greatest superheroes prevent Dr. Doom and his hysterically evil minions from completing the Infinity Sword.

Volume 3 features everything from silly love spells to mayhem at Mutant High. With excellent animation, spunky voice-overs, and creative plots, The Superhero Squad Show is perfect for any geeky family. Each episode includes an original adventure. Every obstacle these heroes tackle cannot be done without some much-needed comedy. The overall dialogue flows in a way that makes the scene fun and serious at the same time. It’s serious in the manner that these guys need to get down to business to find that Infinity Sword… but like most people with egos and agendas, it takes a little longer than they would like. In fact, most of the time, they don’t realize they’re off-track until Dr. Doom’s sidekicks show up with a sword fragment. But in the end, they prevail.

Highlights

A few episodes really stand out for their plot and hilarity together. The episode “Tremble At The Might Of…M.O.D.O.K.!” is the first episode of Volume 3 and it catches the viewer’s eye, mostly because of the introductions of silly characters. In this episode, the villain leader Dr. Doom falls behind and M.O.D.O.K. gains enough control to take over the anti-heroes. This sounds serious, but M.O.D.O.K. is the most ridiculous super villain you have ever seen – with his squeaky voice and tiny floating body, nobody can take him seriously.

Another episode that stands out is “Mental Organism Designed Only For Kissing!” Ms. Marvel comes to town to make Thor fall in love with her when her spell misses and hits M.O.D.O.K., making him fall in love with her. This episode is beyond silly with the fake and absurd romance between Ms. Marvel and the Mental Organism Designed Only for Kissing (a.k.a. M.O.D.O.K.). Overall, M.O.D.O.K. is the silliest character that makes the viewer just think, “What does he think he’s doing?”

Audio & Video

The animation and audio of this DVD are in sync and up-to-date with today’s cartoon style. Volume 3 features the guest voices of Taye Diggs (Daybreak), Michelle Trachtenberg (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Adrian Pasdar (Heroes), LeVar Burton (Star Trek: The Next Generation), Kevin Sorbo (The Legendary Adventures Of Hercules) and Shawn Ashmore (X-Men)! The voice over artists create the characters all on their own and the animations bring them to life.

Overview

The Superhero Squad Show is geared for younger audiences. If you or your children enjoy Cartoon Network shows, this series is perfect for you. The characters are energetic and out of their minds but they really create the story. After all, if it weren’t for the squad, the Mental Organism Designed Only for Kissing would be in charge of everything! Who knows what kind of world that would be…?
