DVD Review: Batman: The Brave and the Bold- Season One, Part Two

The adventures of the Caped Crusader have made their way to DVD in Batman: The Brave and the Bold – Season One, Part Two! With help from Booster Gold, Etrigan the Demon, Black Canary, Blue Beetle, The Huntress, and Aquaman, Batman is able to successfully save the day, week after week!

Episode Highlights:
“Trials of the Demon!”- Batman is transported back in time to save Jason Blood! Now Batman must team up with Etrigan the Demon and Sherlock Holmes to stop Jim Craddock’s mystical plan to gain immortality. Batman recognizes his future foe and tries to save him from becoming the Gentleman Ghost. This episode features a nice homage to the Batman Elseworld‘s story “Gotham by Gaslight”. Additionally, viewers are treated to a team up between Batman and Jay Garrick, the Golden Age Flash, as they fight off a dastardly Halloween related plan by Scarecrow and the Scream Queen.

“Night of the Huntress!”- Batman and Blue Beetle team up with Huntress to face off against Babyface and Mrs. Manface! Can these three heroes stop Babyface before he breaks out prisoners for Blackgate Penitentiary? This episode is full of comedic moments with Blue Beetle asking Batman about the facts of life and asking for his help in getting the Huntress to like him.

“The Color of Revenge!”- At long last, fans are treated to an episode featuring Robin! What happened to break-up the dynamic duo? The opening scene shows our heroes in the past, facing off against a villain called the Crazy Quilt, who is trying to rob an art museum. During the battle, Quilt is accidently blinded by Robin, and claims he will have vengeance. We then ship ahead to the present, and learn that Robin has been fighting crime on his own (in a Earth-2 inspired outfit), trying to step out from the shadow of the Bat. Can Batman and Robin overcome their past differences and stop Crazy Quilt once and for all?

“Mayhem of the Music Meister!”- Batman must stop the nefarious foe known as the Music Meister from taking over Gotham City. This fully musical episode features the talents of Neil Patrick Harris (Dr. Horrible’s Musical Sing Along Blog) as the Music Meister and Grey Delisle as Black Canary. With amazing musical numbers such as “Drives Us Bats” and “If Only”, this episode will leave you wanting more. The campy, over the top musical numbers are cleverly written and fit in well with the stylistic choices of Batman: The Brave and the Bold. The rest of the cast get in on the fun as well as we get to hear the vocal talents of John Di Maggio, Kevin Michael Richardson, Tom Kenny, Dee Bradley Baker, and James Arnold Taylor as the heroes and villains in the musical chorus. I can tell you that the songs will be stuck in your head for days.

Overall:
This happier, wittier, and friendlier version of Batman might be a surprise to some fans, but is still very much rooted in the history of the comics and character. It succeeds in being very entertaining and Diedrich Bader spouts off endless one-liners with spot-on, deadpan delivery.

ComicsOnline gives Batman: The Brave and the Bold – Season One, Part Two – 5 out of 5 witty Batman one-liners.

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
