SDCC2011: Glee – Panel Coverage

Glee returned to Comic-Con this year and took Hall H by storm. Take a look at some of the highlights from the panel:

  • Dot-Marie Jones (Coach Beast), Darren Criss (Blaine), Harry Shum (Mike), Jr, Jenna Ushkowitz (Tina), Brad Falchuk (Writer), and Ian Brennan (Writer) were in attendance.
  • Preview for Glee 3D – “Slave for You” and “Teenage Dream” clips, girl with aspergers talked about how Brittany is hero and saved her life. Brittany commented something on the lines of she thinks her boobs will look good in 3D.
  • Movie will show how the series has affected fans.
  • On the topic of characters leaving: Because they are graduating doesn’t mean they are leaving the show, mentioned the reality of contracts, will define who is Senior/Junior in first episodes of season, “never intention to let them go”, “they are not done with the show after they graduate”, tina is a junior, opening sequence of what they want to do when they grow up.
  • First semester episodes (9-10) are character driven, drawing out character arcs.
  • Idina coming in episode 2.
  • Tribute episode, if happens will be second half of season.
  • Chord was asked to come back for a portion of the season with option of becoming a regular, he declined, said they were excited about character and his arc with Mercedes.
  • Mercedes will have a boyfriend that she met over the summer, “big bubba kind of guy”, encourages her to want more for her self.
  • Reaction to coach beast has been overwhelming.
  • Fans seem mixed about Artie/Tina relationship, Brad says Harry/Tina will be “just fine” this year.
  • Cast seems out of the loop when it comes to next season.
  • Darren referred to it as “Klaine”, BF says they are “solid” as a couple.
  • “It was interesting and painful, it was a lot doing that show and our show. I think everyone will be happy with the results.”-Zach on the Glee Project.
  • Darren: Between Glee and hypothetically broadway I’ll be quite busy and an album is hard to pull off and I have a theater company to run.
  • Deaf man asked about the interaction when shooting the deaf school-dante di loreto says that they learned a lot about what it means to be deaf.
  • Does the music or the story line come first when writing episodes? BF: always the story first, otherwise it would be like writing a movie around action sequences.
  • See more family?: IB: it’s tricky with parents, 2nd episode had rachel’s dads in it but it was cut. “In high school your parents stop being a major influence in your life”.
  • “Those were shipnames for the non-nerds at the table”- DC
  • “I’m still a fan of Artina”- Tina
  • “It should be santitny”-IB
  • BF: britana was originally a joke but evolved into a real story, they realized they needed to recognize the bi/lesb community.
  • IB: we didn’t realize what great talents we had on our hands (brittany and santanaa) but america did.
  • “She’s Brittany bitch”.
  • Spin-off?: Had been thought about through Peter Rice is leaning against since doing 2 shows, Glee is the mothership.
  • “You have to tune in”- Darren becoming a New Directions member.
  • “I’m a huge disney fan. I would be intimidated to sing a Disney song. I would probably want to sing something from Aladdin.”-Darren
  • What part of yourself do you see in your character? “I look like Mike Chang” (Harry)-love of dance, “I’m a big gush”-Dot can relate.
  • Harry taught Heather some dancing at a dance convention Pre-Glee.
  • Has originality/creativity been lost with the popularity?
  • IB: “the stories coming out will knock your socks off” “we didn’t sit down to write a phenomenon”.
  • Coach Beast relationship?- haven’t come up with anything yet
  • Sue’s running for congress, wants to destroy the club at a larger level, running on a no arts platform.
  • Sue’s corner is coming back, things liberachi died on purple piano so asks to have it removed to a museum.
  • Brittany’s lines “flutter on wings in the air”, IB: says writing for Brittany is one of best parts of job.
