TV on DVD Review: Boy Meets World: The Complete Sixth Season

Lionsgate is making me so happy!  Boy Meets World ended in May 2000 and they’ve taken their sweet time getting around to releasing the seven great seasons on DVD. Season 6 doesn’t disappoint!

The Season

We start where we left off, with Topanga proposing to Cory at their high school graduation.  I remember thinking it was all so adorable and romantic when the show first aired.  Now, with several years under my belt and a bit more cynicism, I rolled my eyes just a little bit.  But hey, what can you say, it’s Cory and Topanga – and as Mr. Feeny and Shawn both point out, they’re not like other couples and you can’t tell them what to do.

Traveling through the rest of the season, there are several important moments that come into play.

“His Answer (Part 1)” – this episode marks the arrival of the beautiful Rachel (Maitland Ward – White Chicks, According to Jim).  As a redhead myself, I’m partial to liking her. She moves in with Eric and Jack, creating a tense situation for quite some time, as both vie for her attention in silly, slapstick type ways.

“Everybody Loves Stuart” – Fred Savage, Ben Savage’s (Cory Matthews) older brother and start of the good ol’ show The Wonder Years, shows up in this episode as the group’s favorite new teacher…until he crosses the line and forces Cory’s hand.

“We’ll Have a Good Time Then…”- This episode marks once again how strong I feel Rider Strong’s acting chops are.  Shawn is always an angsty, darker, lost soul type character who can sometimes be irksome with his “I have it worse than anyone ever.” persona, but the way his face crumples and his voice breaks is enough to give me goose bumps. In this one, Blake Clark once again excels as Chet Hunter, Shawn and Jack’s wayward dad, and I was very sad to see him go.  He was a great minor character every time he showed up.  Don’t worry; he appears occasionally in this and the last season!

“Road Trip” – This episode features a pop girl group, Nobody’s Angel.  They waitress at a diner in a podunk town and perform their songs for the crowd, which includes Shawn and Cory as they take a road trip so Shawn can find himself (unbeknownst to Cory, who thinks it’s a weekend getaway).  Their dream is to make it big and they want Shawn and Cory to help them get out and make it (in Philadelphia, clearly the music capital of the world). It’s a very cheesy episode, with obvious lip synching and choreographed dance moves and singers-not-actresses trying their best to be sincere, but this WAS the 90s, and people loved that stuff in the 90s/early 00s, so I give them credit.

“State of the Unions” – While trying to plan their wedding date, Topanga’s parents come and deliver some shocking news that may upset every thought the golden couple has had about happily ever after.

“There’s nothing about me that separates me from anybody else…”

Special Features

They continue to disappoint me with no special features…maybe they’ll put them all in the last season collection? Doubtful, but one can hope!

Audio/Video

The video is in full frame and audio is in English 2.0 Dolby Digital with closed captioning.  Nothing crazy, no subtitles, no wall rattling.  Standard fare.

Overall

Only one season left to go, folks, so catch up on them while you can!  I’m looking forward to getting the last season to round out my collection. Boy Meets World: The Complete Sixth Season seems a little darker than the rest, but I think that’s keeping in touch with people growing up all over the world.  Their lives can’t always stay sunny and easy, such as it is with the gang’s first year in the “real” world.
