Movie Review: A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas

Hilariously inappropriate hijinx drive this vehicle to deliver Xmas early …and in 3D!

by Kendrick Gaussoin, Junior Editor

While Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay picked up almost immediately after the events of Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle, A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas begins years later.

Kumar is now a lazy bum with a disgusting apartment, doing nothing with his life but get high, all of which served to drive away the love of his life. Kumar gets a package for Harold delivered to his apartment, so he takes it to his estranged friend. Harold has quit smoking pot and is now a wall street executive with a nice house and is now married to Maria (Paula Garcés – Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle, Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, Warehouse 13). Christmas eve arrives and Maria’s father (Danny Trejo – From Dusk til Dawn, Spy Kids, Machete, Breaking Bad) arrives with the rest of the family in tow bringing with them their most sacred family tradition: a homegrown Christmas tree.  Kumar arrives with the package and inside is an ornate wooden box in which Harold finds a giant blunt. Kumar immediately takes advantage of this and lights it up. Harold snatches it and throws it out the window. The winds of thin plot device blow the marijuana sausage back in through another window to ignites the sacred tree.

I’ve been growing this tree for eight years.

The rest of A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas consists of the best aspects of a Harold & Kumar movie. While this time their mission is not to get to White Castle or some painful escape from Homeland Security, but instead to replace a Christmas tree to give Harold’s wife and family a nice Christmas, this chapter contains all the buddy comedy we hope for from this franchise, and escalates it with 3D, a claymation sequence, and more fantastic guest stars than ever. Yes, Neil Patrick Harris, aka NPH, aka Neil Poon Hound, is back from the dead. You’re welcome.

This movie is hilarious. The 3D was top quality and really added to the comedic effects, from actors winking at the camera to break the 4th wall to flying eggs or wafting smoke. The baby stole every scene she was in, and her baby-on-drugs comedy was so very wrong, she kept the mood light during what would have otherwise been frighteningly serious parts. The fact that Harold and Kumar are never seriously hurt and always manage to succeed in the end keeps us reminded that we’re watching a supernatural comedy. Our biggest gripes might be that the claymation part didn’t have enough effect on the other people, and that Mary (Jordan Hinson – Eureka) never achieved her own mission.

Overall

In A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas, Harold & Kumar break the 4th wall in 3D, bringing B-loads of belly-laughs like always, and give gifts of the greatest guest stars: Danny Trejo, Tom Lennon and of course copious comely cooze for NPH and the other “Poon Hounds” in the audience. A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas is their best adventure yet, so light up your trees and load up the kids, ’cause this year Santa came early.

ComicsOnline gives A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas 4 out of 5 3D gifts from Santa!

*IMPORTANT PSA from ComicsOnline*
It’s no secret that Harold & Kumar movies are about people having a great time doing a lot of drugs, but THIS IS FICTION. Doing real drugs will really harm you. Don’t be stupid. We know that a lot of famous actors like Kevin Smith and Seth Rogen will tell you that smoking pot is somehow good for you, or at least for them. It isn’t. You probably know people who occasionally do drugs and they’ll tell you that they’re not addicted, that they can quit at any time, and yet they never do. Some of these people might “manage their high” and handle life quite effectively, but these are the exceptions to the general rule that smoking and doing drugs will eventually cost you big, both in terms of money and your health. Be good to yourself.
Don’t put smoke or drugs in your body.
kthx.
