Event Coverage: The Amazing Spider-Man – Sneak Preview Worldwide Simulcast

“You seriously think I’m a cop? In a skintight red and blue suit?”

While it might be several months before The Amazing Spider-Man hits theaters (July 3rd), a select group of fans and press were treated to a special sneak preview of the upcoming release in several cities around the world. ComicsOnline was invited to participate in this global event, attending the Los Angeles component of the simulcast. This event included special appearances by Director Marc Webb (Los Angeles), Andrew Garfield (New York), Emma Stone (Rio), Producer Matt Tolmach (Rio), Producer Avi Arad (Rio), and Rhys Ifans (London).

Following the introductions of the cast and crew, fans were treated to the new 3-D trailer, which will be released online on Feb 7th.

So what is “The Untold Story” of Spider-Man? Marc Webb answered this very important question: “I think there are a lot of things from the Spider-Man canon that haven’t yet been explored cinematically. This movie really starts off with Peter Parker and his parents, which is something we’ve never really seen before, and I think that was something we were all really interested in exploring as filmmakers.”

Emma Stone discussed the differences between Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane: “Gwen is a yin to Mary Jane’s Yang. Gwen’s a valedictorian, and has a great relationship with her father. Gwen falls in love with Peter Parker while MJ falls in love with Spider-Man.”

The next question went to Rhys Ifans, regarding how The Lizard is different than other Spider-Man villains: “They’re all human, and flawed like Peter Parker, but what makes my character have an emotional presence is his relationship with Peter Parker’s Dad.”

The final question went to Andrew Garfield, as he answered what made him want to play Spider-Man: “Because I’m not an idiot. Everyone here wants to be him.” Garfield also quipped, “hopefully next time it will be someone half-Hispanic and half African-American.”

Before they wrapped up the event, Webb offered the audience a chance to see an extended sizzle reel, which included new (and unfinished) footage. This additional provided a better insight into what we can expect when the film is released in a few months, and featured some fantastic moments between Peter and Gwen, Spider-Man in action, Dennis Leary as Captain Stacy, Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben, and several great shots of The Lizard.

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
