TV Review: Supernatural 9×02 – Devil May Care

Supernatural 9x02

by Demi Moumas, Reporter

What could make the Fall more hellish? Well Abbadon coming back to life that’s what! This episode of Supernatural starts off with Dean and Sam heading back to the bunker with Crowley in their trunk while demons revive Abbadon. She isn’t too happy with the way Hell is run either, so Crowley needs to hope she doesn’t find him in the Winchester Bunker.

Speaking of the bunker, Kevin has been trapped inside of it. The bunker locked down when the angels fell. That is some nice ass security system though. All supernatural hell breaks loose and you get stuck inside of an underground bunker…what if he ran out of food? Good job men of letters; it’s basically a death trap in that case. He does get a bit pissed Crowley is still alive. Though to be fair, the kind of torture Dean and Sam have for him is not the conventional kind. I mean really what would work on Crowley? I know…nothing. The silence will get to the demon, who likes the sound of his own voice. I find that cruel and unusual, but demons don’t have rights so good job. While Kevin and Sam are doing their own version of research, Dean ends up warning other hunters about the Fall and the angels that are roaming that are not too pleased with it. Spread the word, the angels are on earth and it’s not a good thing.

With Abbadon, she gathers some demons and decides that the time of deals is done. She wants to change Hell again and become the Queen. Now for those that don’t know, Abbadon is a Knight of Hell and there are more. My question is, why wasn’t Crowley or even Lucifer using the knights when they held reign over Hell? Would have made their world taking schemes work a little better….probably. Well now this Knight is going to attempt it and all I can say is good luck bitch! First step, get the demons into the meat suits of US Navy men.

After investigating the bus crime scene, Sam and Dean learn from Kevin that Abbadon is going after hunters in order to get to them. So they decide to go in guns blazing. While they are heading to Oregon to save those two hunters, they have Kevin look up anything the Men of Letters have on the Knights of Hell. Hopefully the kid can get something that will permanently kill one. All the while, behind the files Crowley is having some flashbacks to what happened before the Fall. He also tries to provoke Kevin, who is search for the Knight of Hell information. He gets it enough that door to his cage opens and he sees the prophet. Kevin demands that Crowley tell him how to kill a Knight of Hell. The demon tries to make a deal to get out of his imprisonment but it doesn’t work. Crowley alludes to the fact that Kevin’s mom isn’t really dead, provoking Kevin to punch him…multiple times. That makes me proud. Kevin congratulations, you officially punched a demon good job.

Dean and Sam end up in a town that had three blocks evacuated due to a chemical leak. And no, a hand over your groin isn’t going to help you Dean. What is funny, is that the dinner that they go into is the same one they found the Mother of All in. Don’t deny it! You can tell by the structure! Nice reuse of the sets. They made it grungier in order to use it for this scene. They end up rescuing Irv Franklin and Tracy Bell, hunters who got captured. When the demons come back they are able to trick them with an iPhone. Cheers for technology. With the game plan set, they start to head their separate ways when Tracy has a problem with Sam. Circle back around to the first five seasons, because Tracy’s parents died because Sam let Lucifer out of his cage. Way to take the mind off the game new girl.

After each group has their pep talks, we learn that Irv was tortured and gave all the hunters up. Instead of being able to go down as a hero, he gets shot. Sam ends up in the arms of the two Navy demons while Abbadon goes after Dean and Tracy. The older Winchester is able to give Tracy enough time to run to his car while he is still in Abbadon’s hands, such the gentleman. Now this demonic woman has a freaky fetish with Dean, which goes beyond just a normal demon’s, want to kill him or even an angel’s want to screw him. Fortunately for him, Sam gets knocked out letting Ezekiel take over in order to kill the Navy demons and scare off Abbadon.

Ezekiel and Dean have a moment. The Winchester explains that him telling the angel all this stuff is Dean trusting him, especially with Sam. I find it interesting that Ezekiel takes to understanding Dean’s doubts a bit faster than Castiel did. Of course, he did follow Castiel and I suppose with that all that has happened in Heaven it is understandable. It also makes me wonder if there are going to be more angels that will help the Winchesters like Castiel and Ezekiel? Or is it only one angel per every five season that gets this close to them? Well we know Dean likes him because Ezekiel is now nicknamed Zeke. They both set it up so when Sam wakes it looks like Dean came in to save the day. We can actually see the toll lying to Sam is taking on Dean by looking at his face. This exemplifies the great acting skills of Jensen Ackles to be able to do that for his character. The scene ends with Dean talking about burgers when Tracy picks them up with the Impala.

Once back at the bunker, they check in on Crowley. The demon gives them two names in exchange for the fun he had with Kevin. I find it funny that the episode ends with two scenes of Dean being all emotional to someone that is helping him. Kevin tells him that Crowley said his mom was alive. Clearly with the backpack he is intending on finding her and trying to save her. He explains to Kevin that he is family to the Winchesters and that they would do anything for him, but he tells him that even if Kevin’s mom was alive that she would be dead. It’s Crowley, he either put a demon in her again or tortured her so much that she’s not the same person.

The episode ends with Sam explaining to Dean that despite being a hunter, that being surrounded by family and friends like Dean and Kevin makes him happy. Of course this brings back the guilt of knowing Ezekiel is in Sam fixing him up.

I consider this a progression episode. We were introduced to a few new characters but the story of Abbadon and Ezekiel’s help was progressed. I just wish that Abbadon and Ezekiel had the same amount of screen time. Despite liking how fixated the Knight of Hell is on Dean, I want to know more about the angel inhabiting Sam. I’ll have to wait until the story in the rest of the season it seems, so sad. The warning Dean sends out to the other hunters might be vital in the future. The character of Tracy Bell as well will be back in the future. We know this because most women in the Winchesters lives are either dead or hunters. I think only Lisa and Charlie are alive from their meetings. All these progressions were told seamlessly and in a cohesive way that they didn’t cause any kind of interference with the other storylines. I commend the people working on the storylines now for doing this where in a previous season that all the fandom does not like; it was very disjointed and rough to do this. These storylines will hopefully build into tension that is so epic and massive that no one will see the twists that arrive with it. Those are the surprises I like and can see for the future of this show.
