DVD Review: My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic: A Dash of Awesome

By Maju Marfori, Reporter

“SONIC RAINBOOM!”  my little girl would say when we would watch her favorite My Little Pony character Rainbow Dash. She always says that “Rainbow Dash is awesome Dad and is the best pony in the series.”  Rainbow Dash always likes to win and is very competitive, just like each of the other characters.  They all have very individual personalities, but together they fill in the missing pieces within each other.

My Little Pony Friendship is Magic: A Dash Of Awesome is a compilation of five episodes starring Rainbow Dash as the main character in the story. It is about Rainbow Dash personality and how the lessons she had to learn with the help of her friends Twilight, Apple Jack, Flutter Shy, Rarity and Pinky Pie so that she can become a better pony. These episodes teach you that it is good to be competitive and know what you want, but at the same time you can be humble and kind to all that is around you. Like the episode May The Best Pet Win! It is about Rainbow Dash wanting a pet that matches her wants such as looks and coolness.   She is unable to decide what pet she wanted (from hawk to bunny to tortoise) so she has a race for which pet was the best.

The picture quality was standard DVD clear and smooth. There are no subtitles, but the vocals were great enough that you didn’t need subtitles.

Overall

I loved the lessons being taught within each episode. Seeing it makes me love the show knowing that my daughter is learning a good lesson in life. I enjoy the friendship that the ponies have and how it shows that life is always about learning that,  with friends by your side, no matter how hard it is, they will always be there for you to make things a little lighter.  The songs are catchy, especially Find a Pet, sung by Rainbow Dash and Flutter Shy.

This DVD is set for a younger crowd of 3-12 but can also be enjoyed by young adults and adults alike. Watching this show makes you feel like a kid again and makes you just want to sing with the music. The lyrics are soft and innocent, unlike the more modern anime songs, which are harder and can have adult content. I understand why My Little Pony Friendship is Magic is such a big hit.
