DVD Review: Power Rangers Super Megaforce: The Legendary Battle Movie

Legendary Battle

by Matt Sernaker, Managing Editor

The Earth is in peril. An army of alien invaders is attacking the planet. We’ve been able to hold them off so far, but now the final invasion has begun. Get ready, because Power Rangers Super Megaforce: The Legendary Battle Extended Edition Movie is now available to own on DVD!

Emperor Mavro and his Armada have launched their final attack on Earth. The Power Rangers Super Megaforce are the only ones capable of stopping the Armada… but with their Zords destroyed, does Earth stand a chance? With a little help from some old friends, the teenagers with attitude are about to embark on a truly legendary battle.

This extended edition movie features the final two episodes of Power Rangers Super Megaforce (“The Wrath” and “Legendary Battle”), complete with an additional 8 minutes of footage not aired during the original broadcast. Most of the extended time included unused Sentai footage, most notably an extended sequence featuring the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers power set.

Legendary Battle

The Series Finale was highly anticipated by fans, since it would showcase special guest appearances by former Rangers, including Tommy (Jason David Frank, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers), Carter (Sean CW Johnson, Lightspeed Rescue), Dana (Alison MacInnis, Lightspeed Rescue), T.J. (Selwyn Ward, In Space), Cassie (Patricia Ja Lee, In Space), Wes (Jason Faunt, Time Force), Damon (Reggie Rolle, Lost Galaxy), Karone (Melody Perkins, In Space/Lost Galaxy), Mike (Hector David Jr, Samurai), and Emily (Brittany Pirtle, Samurai). While it was great to see the return of so many past cast members, their actual screen time was extremely minimal. Fans were hoping for an update on the exploits of the past heroes since we last saw them in their respective series, but no backstory was provided, and some of them didn’t even get any dialogue.

Special Features:
“Power Rangers: A Legacy”: The DVD release also includes one bonus feature, produced by our friend Brian Ward from the Shout! Factory team (responsible for the amazing Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and Power Rangers DVD Boxsets).

Overall:

While the finale had the potential to rival the beloved “Countdown to Destruction” series finale of Power Rangers In Space, Power Rangers Super Megaforce: “The Legendary Battle” fell short in many regards. Although these episodes feel extremely rushed, they still manage to sneak in some great scenes, and an overwhelming feeling of nostalgia during the final moments. If you were a fan of Power Rangers at any point during its 20 year run on television, you are sure to get excited by the final moments of this DVD release.
Rating: ★★★½☆

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
