ComicsOnline: Justice League: Gods and Monsters is an original concept; how did you go about coming up with the concept for this project?

Bruce Timm: It started out as an idea for a reboot of the Justice League TV series. The only marching orders I was given was that it was not going to be a continuation of the old show. They basically said “new and different” and then I thought, if we go with an alternate universe version of the main three characters–And specifically Superman, if he’s not the son of Jor-El, if he’s the son of Zod, well then that suddenly changes the entire universe.

CO: Which one of the three was your favorite to redesign and come up with a new concept for?

BT: I’ll say Batman was the easiest one to design. I got his costume kinda first-pass. He’s a vampire and he’s got goggles and we kept the traditional Bat-ears, but then his costume is kind of a superhero-ized of the classic Count Dracula. You know, opera suit? For Superman, I knew I didn’t want him to look like a traditional superhero, so I kind of ended up stripping everything down to its bare minimum. He’s just wearing tight pants and a tight shirt, and then I put that long leather jacket on him, so I [kinda thought] you know, that’s a little bit like a cape, but not quite, so I thought that kinda worked. And then my first idea for Wonder Woman, before we even came up with the idea of her being a New God, was to do like a Jack Kirby-ized version of Wonder Woman, so that’s why she looks like that. So I don’t really have a favorite of the three, I think all of them are kinda cool.

CO: Did you draw any inspiration from older comics for their specific designs?

BT: No, they were completely original.

CO: Do you have anything else to say about Justice League: Gods and Monsters before we go?

BT: It’s great! Buy it!

Justice League: Gods and Monsters is now available on DVD, Blu-ray, Digital On Demand, and for Download.
