Movie Review: Spies in Disguise

by Matt Sernaker, Managing Editor

Get ready, because Blue Sky Studios and 20th Century Fox are about to release their latest animated adventure: Spies in Disguise!

When the world needs saving, super spy Lance Sterling is the man for the job. This one-man army is armed with the latest tech and has the skills to take on any evil threat. When Sterling finds himself framed for crimes that he didn’t commit, he turns to technical prodigy Walter Beckett to help him disappear. Beckett’s solution: use an highly experimental formula to turn Agent Sterling into a super spy…pigeon? Can Sterling learn how to channel his inner pigeon and use this new stealth approach to stop the villainous Killian before he launches his evil plans?

Loosely based on Lucas Martell’s animated short Pigeon: Impossible, this CGI spy thriller features a stellar vocal cast, including Will Smith (Men in Black) as Agent Sterling, Tom Holland (Spider-Man: Far From Home) as Walter Beckett, Rashida Jones (Parks and Recreations) as Agent Marcy Kappel, Ben Mendelsohn (Captain Marvel) as Killian, Reba McEntire (Reba) as Joy Jenkins, Masi Oka (Heroes) as Katsu Kimura, Karen Gillan (Jumanji: The Next Level) as Eyes, and DJ Khaled (Bad Boys for Life) as Ears. Smith and Holland get the majority of the screen time as the mis-matched spy team. Smith falls seamlessly into the role of Agent Sterling, and Holland channels his charm and energy into the role of quirky scientist Walter. Jones’ performance as Agent Marcy Kappel was a highlight, as her quest to takedown the corrupt Agent Stirling utilized her comedic style and timing perfectly. Mendelsohn provides a solid performance as the villainous Killian, the bad guy armed with a robotic arm and eye. I was a bit concerned that they were going to go full on Dr. Klaw with his character, but I was pleasantly surprised by the nuanced performance. Rachel Brosnahan also provides a supporting role as Wendy Beckett, Walter’s mother and inspiration.

The animation and designs from Blue Skies Studios continues to be clever and visually impressive. The cartoonish elements played well to the story, but the action sequences stood out as the most engaging elements. Shout out to the character designers and animators for finding a way to transition between Agent Sterling as a human to a believable Agent Stirling as a pigeon.

Spies in Disguise has something for everyone and will surely excite both kids and adults this holiday season. Adults will love the James Bond style spy thriller elements, while kids will love the ridiculousness of the animal filled adventure. While the concept of this movie might seem a bit odd, the humor, writing, and vocal performances blended perfectly for a highly enjoyable adventure.
Rating: ★★★★½
ComicsOnline gives Spies in Disguise 4.5 out of 5 pigeon subtitles.

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
