Book Review: Batman: The Animated Series: The Phantom City Creative Collection

by Matt Sernaker, Managing Editor

Holy Impressive Collection Batman! Batman: The Animated Series – The Phantom City Creative Collection is now available. This special release from Insight Editions and Mondo Entertainment is filled with stunning visuals and designs that will excite Batman fans of all ages.

The 143-page hardbound book is truly gorgeous from cover to cover. Award-winning artist Justin Erickson (Phantom City Creative, Inc.), delivers noir-inspired imagery that looks like it came directly from the 1920s and ’30s. This book will make you want to go back and re-watch every moment of Batman: The Animated Series. The artwork is accompanied by notes on the corresponding images, with insights into the creative process.

As readers turn the page, they will be treated to a variety of poster-style designs and mockups for episodes of the hit show, as well as artwork inspired by the theatrical release: Batman: Mask of the Phantasm

Not a single page of this book was wasted, as this release is filled with impactful art, colors, and concepts that make it a unique addition to any collection. One of the elements that I enjoyed most was getting to see from concept to execution, with more behind the scenes elements and alternate designs.

While all of the art in this book is impressive to say the least, my personal favorites from this collection include Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (Pages 16-17), His Silicon Soul (Page 76-77), The Demon’s Quest (Pages 88-89), and Shadow of the Bat (90-91).

In addition to the incredible artwork, the release also features a forward from Paul Dini, writer and co-producer of Batman: The Animated Series. Dini’s words act as the perfect introduction to the collection, adding further distinction to this collection.

Overall

This is a must-have for any fan of Batman: The Animated Series, and would surely make for the perfect gift around the holiday seasons. You might also have the Batman soundtrack stuck in your head for days after reading this (I know that I did). Justin Erickson perfectly captures the magic and creativity of the series with every page, making this an impactful and vibrant tribute to the Dark Knight.

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
