King Spawn # 23 picks up right where the previous issue’s cliffhanger left off, with Spawn and Sam’s discovery of Yoko Ono…(wait for it)…zaka in the Exodus Corporation’s underground vault of horrors. Exodus had been using the brains they’d harvested to evolve Yoko’s abilities, and as her powers grew, so did her hatred for Spawn, who she blames for her own situation and Cyan’s perilous predicament. Overwhelmed by Yoko’s powers, Spawn is left sputtering in debilitating agony, fully at the mercy of Yoko’s army of angry spirits, with only Sam Burke’s whits, fearlessness, and sidearm to save him. Will they be enough? Can Sam’s gun stand up to Yoko’s pink glowing ghosts? Will his fearlessness withstand her mental probing into his past? Can his whits get help from Twitch and Terry before it’s too late? Or will Spawn overcome Yoko’s supernatural strikes before things become even more dire?

Writer Sean Lewis continues to spin a tale of dark intrigue that balances many story threads entwining in the background to form a web to ensnare the reader. Lewis wastes little time reminding us of Yoko’s motivation or rage, instead showing what she intends to do next, propelling the story forward quickly. Artist Kevin Keane combines classic Spawn imagery with his fresh dramatic approach, creating pages that flow from panel to panel. Keane takes every opportunity to stamp each frame with his own style and unique artistic perspective. Ivan Nunes once again lends his incredible eye for color and ability to add natural yet dynamic lighting to Spawn’s otherwise dark world.

The danger is truly coming to a head for our would-be King of Hell and those he cares for, as the scope of Spawn’s exigencies come into focus. King Spawn #23 raises the stakes skyward as it moves players into position for the imminent, and sure to be explosive, conflict around the corner.
