Comic Book Review: TMNT: The Last Ronin Lost Years #4

by Blake Hill, Reporter

The Last Ronin continues the tale of Michelangelo fighting the biggest demons of his life (since Kavaxas).  What will become of the final torchbearer of the turtles’ legacy?

Official Synopsis:
In the past: Michelangelo’s journey toward vengeance takes a detour when he’s captured, imprisoned, and forced to take part in a gladiatorial competition with fighters from all over the world. Though new friendships are formed with would-be foes, one thing is certain: the only way to attain his freedom is to fight. It will take all Michelangelo’s skill to defeat those who stand between him and vengeance.

Meanwhile, in the present (a.k.a. our future!): Casey Marie Jones and her young Turtle pupils grapple with the lessons left by their late sensei Michelangelo as the situation in NYC worsens.

Creative Team:
Writers: Kevin Eastman & Tom Waltz
Artists: SL Gallant, Maria Keane, Ben Bishop
Colorist: Luis Antonio Delgado
Letterer: Shawn Lee

The story of Michelangelo’s life without his family continues to be a painful tale of survival, with an adult Mikey fighting for his life in a conscripted cage match.  Thanks to a flash-forward, we know he lives to start the training of a fascinating new generation of ninjas, but it’s a dark path to get from here to there.

Gallant, Keane, and Bishop take the soft edges off the Turtles’ style, and Eastman and Waltz hit us with an issue of TMNT that contains zero pizza and not a cowabunga in sight. The next generation of ninja turtles is a shot of fresh blood for the franchise, with new potential heroes, abilities, and pizza preferences that I can’t wait to read about (is Hawaiian style still a thing in the TMNT future?)

Rating: ★★★★☆
