Advance Review: Star Trek: Day of Blood #1

by Matt Sernaker, Managing Editor

Sisko’s return. Worf’s theft of the Defiant. The Orbs of the Prophets. Star Trek & Star Trek: Defiant have been building to this, as the Day of Blood has finally arrived! The first-ever Star Trek comic book crossover event begins with a massive opening salvo in IDW Publishing’s epic five-part story from writers Christopher Cantwell, Collin Kelly, & Jackson Lanzing. What does Kahless II have in store for the universe? You’re about to find out…

Official Synopsis:
Day of Blood Starts Here! Immortal emperor of the Klingon Empire, Kahless II has consolidated power, raided ancient tombs and secret bunkers, taken the power of gods for himself, stolen the Bajoran Orb of Destruction, and commenced a slaughter across the stars. But this genocide of gods was just the beginning. For with the power he has stolen, Kahless is about to declare war on all those who do not follow the Red Path. To prevent genocide unlike any since the ancient days of Qo’noS, the crew of icons led by the emissary known as Benjamin Sisko (Star Trek) and the renegades who follow a desperate and violent Worf (Star Trek: Defiant) must unite for a common cause. Only they can hope to stop the Day of Blood.

There are many pivotal moments in the Star Trek Universe. The launch of the Phoenix. The peace talks at KhitomerWolf 359. Frontier Day. The creative team from IDW’s Star Trek saga have decided to add one more to the list: Day of Blood. This crossroads has been looming since the return of Sisko, and now the Emissary must find a way to stop Kahless II before he destroys anyone who stands in his way. The crossover event begins with the crews of the Theseus and the Defiant reunite on the Klingon world of Qo’noS. Worf and Sisko obviously have issues to work out, but we are also treated to memorable moments with Data and Lore, as well as Tom and B’Elanna that add more layers to this overdue gathering. Meanwhile, Kahless puts out a battle cry to the Klingon Homeworld, telling his people that there is a new way…a new Red Path forward. To no surprise, many take their leader up on his call to action and the uprising has officially begun.

If you’ve been following ComicsOnline over the last few months, you probably know how much we’ve been enjoying the IDW Star Trek books. The creative team has carved out a unique story within the greater Star Trek world, adding rich character development and engaging interactions with each passing issue. Star Trek: Day of Blood #1 feels like a critical moment for Trek, and this stellar first installment has established that more dark days are ahead for Sisko, Worf, and their respective crews. There is so much to love in this book, and I couldn’t narrow down my favorite character pairing if I wanted to. Do yourself a favor and grab this issue (as well as the previous IDW Publishing Star Trek comics) from your Local Comic Store this week. This is an event that you don’t want to miss.

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
