Melissa and her all-star creative team have done a remarkable job with their “Recharged” arc of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. The second volume collects issues #103-106, which included some truly incredible character moments and mythology.

Lord Zedd is on the run from the newly returned Rita Repulsa, now known as “Mistress Vile”. What exactly happened on the moon prior to the Rangers’ arrival? And what has become of Matt? We know that nothing good will come from Rita’s reunion with the green power coin…and poor Matt was left behind so that his friends could escape. Although the Rangers already have enough to deal with, a distress signal from the Omega Rangers causes even more concerns as someone or something has taken down the Omega Zords. It turns out that the evil Alpha 1 has returned as well, and he is more dangerous than ever. Readers are also treated to an amazing Rita-centric flashback story, recapping the events that led to her new power set and title. Fans will be pleasantly surprised by several of the villainous interactions, as several favorite characters from Mighty Morphin through In Space play into her shocking developments. We also get a bit more on the Master Arch and the history of the Morphin Grid and the Navigator technology. Why does Mistress Vile need these ancient artifacts, and how do they connect to the return of Master Vile? Lastly, a twist years in the making comes into play as Lord Zedd gets his hands on one of the most dangerous objects in the universe…

While each of the chapters brought something new and exciting to the Power Rangers universe, issue #106 was one of my personal favorites. Melissa Flores has officially earned the title of “Empress of Evil”, because the cliffhanger ending of MMPR #106 was mind-blowing. I can’t remember the last time I was this excited about a comic release, but I will resist the temptation to spoil a moment that made me cheer. From the opening exchange between Rita and Zedd to a heartfelt conversation between old friends about the hardships of losing loved ones, there is so much to take in throughout this breathtaking comic. From an art perspective, the final pages of this issue might be my favorite in recent years, as the build is strategically executed to the big reveal. Additionally, the interaction between Tommy and Jason was truly wonderful, and a touching tribute to our fallen friend Jason David Frank. Balancing story and fan-service moments can be a fine line, but this creative team continues to do it with style.

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
