Comic Book Review: Void Rivals #3

by Matt Sernaker, Managing Editor

The newly launched Energon Universe continues to expand with the release of Void Rivals #3 from Skybound Entertainment. The first two chapters featured some surprising appearances from the Transformers Universe, and this latest chapter continues that trend while moving the narrative along for our alien duo.

Official Synopsis:
ROBERT KIRKMAN & LORENZO DE FELICI’s new shared universe debuts a monstrous new villain! Fighting for their lives to return to the Sacred Ring, Darak and Solila face a new threat—capture! And they’re not the only prisoners on this ship…

Creative Team:
Writer: Robert Kirkman
Artist: Lorenzo De Felici
Colorist: Mathues Lopes
Letterer: Rus Wooton

Having narrowly escaped the planet, Darak and Solila have found themselves in a new precarious situation as their ship has been taken aboard a Skuxxoid ship! You know the Skuxxoids, they were the race of mercenaries from Transformers Season 3 story “The Five Faces of Darkness”. Well, our alien friends quickly escape from their captor and explore their new surroundings, only to find another big surprise from the Transformers franchise: a Quintesson! The question of who to trust continues to be a major theme for the book, as appearances are always…more than meets the eye. What happens next will surely leave you shocked and confused, as readers will need to wait until the next chapter for the resolution of the latest cliffhanger.

Kirkman and team continue to tell a captivating story in this new chapter of Void Rivals. I love the dynamic between Darak and Solila, and appreciate the callbacks to the weirder elements from Transformers G1 & The Transformers: The Movie. The inclusions all seem to have a purpose, moving the narrative along while providing additional enjoyment for those of us who grew up watching the robots in disguise. De Felici and Lopes’ art style and color choices are more impressive with each passing issue, ensuring that the outer space adventures of these characters are striking and rich.

Rating: ★★★★★

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
