Comic Book Review: Rare Flavours #1

by Kevin Gaussoin, Editor-in-Chief

You and I have a lot in common with Bakasura. We love all the best gourmet delights. We love to bring attention to our favorite foods and beverages. We love to bring acclaim to those with the best recipes. Whenever UberEats shows up, we devour the driver for dessert. Wait.

From Ram V (Detective Comics, The Vigil) and Filipe Andrade (Fantastic Four) comes the latest series from BOOM! Studios: Rare Flavours #1!

Official Description:
Discover the tantalizing tale of Rubin Baksh, a demonic Rakshasa with a down-to-earth dream of becoming the next Anthony Bourdain. To achieve his vision, Rubin enlists Mo, a filmmaker who has seen better days, to document the world-renowned cuisine of India and the people behind such glorious food. But little does Mo know that there’s more to Rubin than meets the eye, and the mortals play a darker role in the show than they were prepared for…   Entice your palate with the follow up offering from the  Eisner, Harvey, and Ringo Award-nominated team of Ram V (Detective Comics, Blue In Green) and Filipe Andrade (Fantastic Four, Star) in this series painstakingly prepared for fans of Anthony Bourdain’s Hungry Ghosts and Eat The Rich!

Bakasura, now known as “Rubin Baksh” is a Rakshasa (not the anthropomorphic tigers from Dungeons & Dragons) from The Mahabharata. That tale was first compiled a couple thousand years ago. What has Baksh been up to since then? Healing, certainly. His back, famously broken by the hero Bhima, has mostly recovered. His appetites? Well… I guess we’ll find out.

Baksh has decided that he wants to create a documentary about food and sell it to a streaming company. It seems like this will eventually happen, but it also seems like Mo, the director / cinematographer that Baksh has his eye on,  may be dessert in the end. This whole thing seems very much like a Corinthian arc from The Sandman, where we chew our own knuckles watching the villain play with his food.

While Rare Flavours #1 is more than just an amuse-bouche, it does set the table by introducing us to our locale and cast of characters. Then it whets our appetites with its thorough explanation of how to prepare the best masala chai, flavored with spices and tradition and sacrifice and loss.

Rare Flavours #1 is devilishly delicious. Ram V and Filipe Andrade cook up a tale worthy of Gaiman or Bourdain.

Rating: ★★★★★
ComicsOnline gives Rare Flavours #1 – 5/5 perfect cups of masala chai.
