Blu-ray Review: Star Trek: Picard – The Final Season

by Matt Sernaker, Managing Editor

Under the leadership of talented showrunner/director/writer Terry Matalas, the crew of the Enterprise-D faced their darkest hour and were forced to come together to save the universe one last time. This team crafted the perfect opportunity to give these legends the closure that they should have received nearly 20 years earlier. Now you can own the final voyages of the Enterprise-D crew, as Star Trek: Picard – The Final Season is now available on Blu-ray!

Jonathan Frakes as Riker, Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine, Sir Patrick Stewart as Picard, Brent Spiner as Data, LeVar Burton as Geordi, Michelle Hurd as Raffi, Michael Dorn as Worf, Gates McFadden as Beverly Crusher and Ed Speleers as Jack Crusher in Star Trek: Picard on Paramount+. This season of Star Trek: Picard achieved a status that few shows are able to accomplish. This isn’t just about must-see TV, but a story that is elevated to a cultural moment where viewers new and old are excited to discuss, speculate, and celebrate their heroes. We’ve seen reboot after reboot over the last decade that failed to value why their respective characters and stories were so beloved. This particular instance shows how well a revival story can be, even if it’s long overdue.

The final season is filled with impressive acting from each of the talented members of the cast. Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, Michael Dorn, Gates McFadden, Brent Spiner, and LeVar Burton took advantage of every second of screen time. The crew of the Enterprise-D gave this finale run their all to ensure that viewers received the best possible conclusion for their iconic characters. Everyone got a chance to shine, with characterization and career-defining performances that will surely be regarded as the best that Trek has ever featured.

The season also features standout performances from Jeri “Give This Captain a Show Now” Ryan, Michelle Hurd, Ed Speleers, Todd Stashwick, Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut, and Mica Burton. The next next generation truly shines bright with these characters (except for Todd…because spoiler…he’s dead), and I think we would all pay good money to see their respective stories continue after this season with the newly launched Enterprise-G.

Visually speaking, Season 3 is gorgeous. The initial flight sequence of the Enterprise-D was the perfect example of the hero shot, and the Borg get their equivalent moment in the opening moments of the finale. The spectacular return of the Enterprise-D, along with the final battle against the Borg, is something that we could have only dreamed of previously.

Special Features

  • The Gang’s All Here – Featurette (Exclusive)
  • The Making of the Last Generation – Featurette (Exclusive)
  • Audio Commentary on select episodes (Exclusive) – My personal highlight of this release was the included audio commentary. I absolutely loved hearing the behind the scenes stories and commentary from the talented minds that crafted this experience, and I would absolutely recommend rewatching the season with the commentary.
  • Deleted Scenes (Exclusive) – Out of all the deleted scenes, my favorite was the additional story element for Worf. How did his life of pacifism begin? No spoilers, but this cut scene added some deep layers to his backstory.
  • Gag Reel (Exclusive)
  • Rebuilding the Enterprise-D – Featurette – The Enterprise-D – The recreation of the Enterprise bridge was handled in painstaking detail, with expert craftsmanship and an approach that would rival most museum-level recreations. Production design teams so rarely get recognized, and this wonderful featurette helps to capture the magic that it took to bring this iconic set back to life.
  • Villainous Vadic – Featurette
  • Picard: The Final Season Q&A

Overall
This creative team executed the perfect story that honored these iconic characters, as well as the franchise in its entirety. Over a ten-week span, Terry Matalas and his crew boldly took audiences on a journey that was on par with previous pop culture events like LOST Season 1, Heroes Season 1, or Game of Thrones (everything before the final season). An Emmy win for Star Trek would only help to elevate the chances of a new Paramount+ series that featured the continuing adventures of the Enterprise. The final season of Star Trek: Picard wasn’t just a regular occurrence for television, but a celebration and culmination of 35+ years of storytelling. This Blu-ray release is absolutely worth of your collection, and hopefully it will be complemented by potential Star Trek: Legacy releases in the years to come…

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
