Cooking Review: Yellowstone: The Official Dutton Ranch Family Cookbook

by Matt Sernaker, Managing Editor

It’s time to roundup some friends and family for some home cooking, because Insight Editions has just released Yellowstone: The Official Dutton Ranch Family Cookbook! Featuring 55 recipes inspired by the television series Yellowstone, this beautiful cookbook from Gabriel “Gator” Guilbeau will surely be a welcomed addition for fans and aspiring chefs.

The Author

Actor/Chef Gabriel “Gator” Guilbeau has crafted this unique collection of recipes inspired by his time with the Yellowstone series. Best known for his performance as “Gator,” the Dutton family’s personal chef on the show, Guilbeau’s real-world experience includes acting as chef and the current head of craft services for the series itself, as well as time with Jurassic World and American Horror Story.

The Recipes

This book is packed from cover to cover with home-style recipes. The recipes are broken up into Starters, Main Dishes, Side Dishes, Desserts, and Drinks for easy reference. While Main Dishes dominate the bulk of the book, you will have plenty of options to pair your entrees with as you work through the lengthy offerings. There is such a wide variety of items to select from, it is hard to know where to start. Items of personal interest include:

  • Fried Okra
  • Taylor’s Beef Jerky
  • John’s Perfect Rib Eye Syeak
  • Helluva Grilled Flank Steak with Mustard-Mushroom Sauce
  • Western Butter Chicken with Rice
  • Racher’s Chicken and Biscuit Dumplings
  • Golden Squash Casserole
  • Ranch Hand Baked Beans
  • Biss-Ass Chocolate Chip Cookies
  • John and Jamie’s Huckleberry Whisky Sour

The only comment that I would add is that these are very heavy recipes. As excited as I am about attempting the various recipes, it would have been nice to have included a bit more variety when it came to the inclusion of some healthier options.

The Pictures

When I’m considering purchasing a cookbook, one of the first things I will look for is the images that accompany each recipe. I’m very much a self-taught cook, and having vivid and engaging visuals to reference has absolutely helped to increase my comfort and confidence when taking on a new culinary challenge. In the case of the Yellowstone Cookbook, the recipes are paired with stunning visuals that will make your mouth water as you turn from page to page. Several recipes that would traditionally have been lower on my priority list are getting bumped to the top thanks to the wonderful photography by Waterburry Publications Inc.

The Yellowstone Tie-In

Beyond the recipes themselves, one of my favorite choices for this release was the story at the top of each page. While I tend to skip the story part when looking for a recipe online, I found this to be insightful as it connected selections to specific episodes and elaborated on the choices that were made. The fact that Guilbeau acts as the Chef for the series (on TV and in real-life), I think that his unique perspective adds an interesting layer to the culinary elements that is beyond what you would normally get in a tie-in release like this. From a visual perspective, fans should find a lot of comfort while reviewing the book, as the release features numerous images courtesy of Emerson Miller (Unit Still Photography for Yellowstone).

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
