Comic Book Review: Green Lantern: War Journal #2

by Tony Rhea, Reporter

Going home is never easy, and for John Stewart, it’s only getting harder. DC drops Green Lantern: War Journal #2 this week, and keeps dropping the heavy hits.

Official Description:
DISCOVER THE SHOCKING IDENTITY OF THE REVENANT QUEEN! As John Stewart travels to Metropolis to meet with Steelworks, the Radiant Dead have claimed their first victim on Earth-0 and are ravenously hunting for John. Stripped of his ring and unaware of the danger he’s in, John is caught completely unprepared to face this otherworldly horror…and to unravel the shocking identity of the Revenant Queen!

Creative Team:
Writer: Phillip Kennedy Johnson
Artist: Montos
Colorist: Alex Guimarães
Letterer: Dave Sharpe

Varron returns to Earth-0 with some friends, seeking revenge against John, but bites off more than he can chew when he encounters something he wasn’t expecting in the jungle. John and his Mom head off to Steelworks for an interview with John Henry Irons, but their conversation about their combined future is interrupted by a rude visit from a newly-empowered Varron. Varron may or may not beat John, but he’ll ensure that John’s problems are only beginning.

In contrast to the new Green Lantern series featuring Hal Jordan, John Stewart is looking for the quiet life, but waiting on the strange. I appreciate the take that Johnson is taking in War Journal, as Johnson writes John less as looking for action, but always ready. Whereas Hal Jordan wants to be in the action, John Stewart is ready to be done with it. John Stewart is a man hungry for his past and thirsting for time lost, and Johnson and his more than capable team ensure that this hero is thrust towards a dangerous future, doing it with skill and care. The myriad of issues John has to contend with during his homecoming could be pits for any writer to become mired in, but Johnson handles this story flawlessly.

Montos and Guimarães are no slouches, and not to be outdone, the issue looks amazing. While John and the supporting cast all look great, it is the Radiant Dead that look the best in this issue. The glow-effect looks great on these characters, and the Radiant Dead as a whole look great. Lighting effects throughout the issue, besides the Radiant Dead, also look amazing. The facial expressions in the issue really help to sell it, though, as Montos makes full use of the range of human emotion for each character.

Green Lantern: War Journal #2 is a must read, hands down. This series is off to a strong start, and for Johnson and team, it looks like the only way is up!
