Advance Review: Ghost Machine #1 (One-Shot)

by Matt Sernaker, Managing Editor

My pull list just got a whole lot longer…

Image Comics presents the first chapter of the new creator-shared universe from the team at Ghost Machine! This impressive one-shot sets the stage for a new line of books from a killer creative line-up that features some of the biggest names in comics, including: Jason Fabok, Gary Frank, Bryan Hitch, Geoff Johns, Lamont Magee, Francis Manapul, Brad Meltzer, Peter J. Tomasi, and Maytal Zchut. With names like these in full control of the stories, what are you waiting for?

The 64-page release was a smart way to build excitement for the new series, and I’m probably going to be pulling at least four of these new titles (if not more) on a regular basis. This special was the perfect sampler of things to come, providing just enough of a teaser for the individual books that you will surely want to explore further. I don’t know if I’m more excited about Geiger (the nuclear hero that wanders a wasteland 25 years in the future), Redcoat (and his fellow immortals that have played a surprising role in our history), Rook (the space farmer that now fights to save his new world), or The Rocketfellers (a family from the far future that is giving off Fantastic Four adventure vibes).

From the captivating introductions to the beautifully crafted art and coloring, each page was strategically used to its fullest to make a positive impression. You can feel the collective excitement from the creative team(s) exuding from the book as you flip through each chapter, and this is exactly what I want from my comic reading experience. Beyond the stories, I also appreciated the introduction to Ghost Machine team and their mission/vision of ensuring that their content is creator-owned and controlled. We’ve seen a lot of big names move away from “The Big Two” to launch their own IPs in recent years (shout-out to the Massive-Verse creative team, also supported by Image), and this is looking to be quite an experience. After spending this short amount of time with these characters, I’m onboard with Ghost Machine.

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
