Advance Review: Golgotha Motor Mountain

by Kevin Gaussoin, Editor-in-Chief

This past year we’ve had a few jarring comics to review, and Golgotha Motor Mountain is the first comic book of 2024 that made us question what exactly we just read. Golgotha Motor Mountain from IDW Publishing is Breaking Bad meets John Carpenter’s The Thing. Vern and Elwood, a pair of country boy brothers living in rural Kentucky “breaking bad” so they can achieve their dreams of moving to a one bedroom in high society Cincinnati. In order to accomplish this, they’re going to sell their illicit product directly to some big players rather than “just cook” and assumedly continue whatever less profitable arrangement they’ve been working at thus far. Stop one on their wholesale tour, they’re gonna go sell their wares to the local fascist organization (like ya do).

And then a meteorite smashes through their barn and ruins the batch.

Creative Team:
Writers: Lonnie Nadler & Matthew Erman
Artist: Robbi Rodriguez
Colorist: Marissa Louise
Letterer: Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou
Backup Artist: Nikola Čižmešija

*SPOILERS*

This might be a big reveal, but it’s the crux of the whole Golgotha Motor Mountain story so here goes: The meteorite is really a piece of a parasitic organism, and of course they bust it up and sell it as premium purple crystal. This leads to the aforementioned thing (from another world) transforming white nationalists into something even more hideous. Who knew this was even possible?

We know Robbi Rodriguez from Spider-Gwen, but who is this Golgotha Motor Mountain colorist? Marissa Louise gave this story just the right amount of psychedelic. For that matter, Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou does a great job with giving a distinct voice to the narrator. That narrator is a jerk, btw. Don’t trust ‘em.

Golgotha Motor Mountain probably wouldn’t have been on my list, but after multiple readings, I realize that there may very well be a seriously good horror story here. I’ll reserve that pronouncement until at least the second issue, but I’ll let you know.

Rating: ★★★☆☆
ComicsOnline gives Golgotha Motor Mountain #1 – 3 out of 5 meteoric macguffins.
