Comic Book Reviews: Week of 4/29/2026

ComicsOnline kicked off 2026 by reading a TON of comics. There’s a lot to talk about, and we wanted to highlight some of our picks for the week of April 29th, 2026.

Zatanna #1
Rating: ★★★★½
by Matt Sernaker

Official Synopsis: SUPERSTAR JAMAL CAMPBELL TAKES ZATANNA’S MAGIC TO THE NEXT LEVEL! Zatanna Zatara embarks on her greatest tour yet! As the newest and first Prime Magus in millennia, it is now Zatanna’s sworn responsibility to oversee and guide the world of magic. All eyes are on her. How will she accomplish this grand task? How will she shoulder this heaviest of responsibilities? How will she confront the horrors waiting in forgotten histories? With a wink, a flourish, and a whole lot of magic! All-star writer/artist Jamal Campbell (Zatanna: It’s Showtime) is back for an encore with the mistress of magic as she finally gets her own ongoing series!

Review: Zatanna get’s a strong launch as part of DC’s ALL IN – NEXT LEVEL launch. Z is no stranger to the spotlight, but taking her rightful place as the first Prime Magus in the mainstream DC Universe is a fantastic creative choice. Magic is evolving in the world of DC, and having her at the center of it allows for some interesting character dynamics and growth. Zatanna has been a personal favorite of mine for years, and I think that Jamal Campbell just nailed it with this first chapter. I’d highly recommend adding this one to your pull list. Zatanna’s solo launch is a perfect way to raise the bar for the next chapter of the DC Universe.

Justice League Intergalactic Special #1
Rating: ★★★★☆
by Matt Sernaker

Official Synopsis: A NEW CHAPTER OF THE ALL IN: ACT II SAGA! The planet Naltor and the Green Lanterns that protect it fall under the spell of the wretched Witch Queen, who harnesses the planet’s dream energy in hopes of taking over all that lies beyond. But have no fear, Star Sapphire’s assembled team of Justice Leaguers will no doubt liberate them all! Except, well, Green Arrow sure does hate space. And Adam Strange’s ship comes under attack before it even enters Naltorian orbit. And Galaxy invited her best friend and one of the League’s most wanted, Dreamer, along on the mission without telling anybody. And Dreamer’s visions seem to spell doom from the very start. Just when Star Sapphire thought she was getting the hang of her powers and the whole team-leader thing… Will this team of disparate dynamos figure out how to come together to win the day? Or will they, too, succumb to the Witch Queen’s all consuming hive mind?

Review: I love ridiculous team-up issues. That’s right kids, Green Arrow is headed to outer space! Don’t worry, Star Sapphire is leading the way along with Adam Strange and Galaxy as they hope to stop the cosmic threat of the Witch Queen. The special one-shot also features the first reunion between Dreamer and Green Arrow since the Absolute Power event, and the two will have to put their concerns aside to save the day and stop a threat that took down a whole lot of Green Lanterns… This book continues the trend of leaning into the Justice League Unlimited concept, with fun pairing that really shouldn’t work as well as they do. I love the old Short Packed comic that made the joke about Batman not being the best person for a cosmic adventure since he can’t breathe in space (see below), and with this new release, Oliver is in a similar position. Kudos to writers Jadzia Axelrod & Nicole Maines, artist Travis Moore, colorist Tamra Bonvillain, and letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou for putting together an entertaining space adventure. I hope that DC continues to do more of these specials, as this (along with the DC K.O. stories) have been consistently great.

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
