Comic Book Reviews: Week of 6/24/2026

There are some incredible books hitting your local comic book store this week, so let’s dive right in and highlight some of our picks for the week of June 24th, 2026

Ultimate Endgame #5
Rating: ★★★★½
by Matt Sernaker

Official Synopsis: THE END OF THE LINE! The universe hangs by a thread as our weary heroes face their final, crushing challenge: the ultimate, cataclysmic showdown with The Maker! Everything they have fought for, everything they believe in, will be tested in this pulse-pounding, oversized final issue. There are no more retreats, no more second chances.

Review: I will give Marvel this, the final issue of Ultimate Endgame had a significant weight to it. The Maker’s grande scheme finally comes to a head as the villain formerly known as Reed Richards decides that you can’t perfect an imperfect universe, so it’s time to start again with only the ultimate being as the template: himself! What does this mean for the heroes of the Ultimate Universe? All hands are on deck for a crazy battle that felt on-par with it’s MCU Endgame counterpart. To call this a Hail Mary play would be understating the severity of the situation, but thankfully, the big surprises weren’t spoiled in advance. As a pleasant surprise, Doom comes to the rescue, and the truth about the 1610 Reed Richards stands revealed in a rather EPIC manner. Aside from Ultimate Spider-Man, this incarnation of Doom has been the true standout of the entire saga, and there are multiple moments in this particular chapter that make the entire story worth the investment. I’m not crying, YOU’RE CRYING. While the end of the Ultimate Universe books feels like an abrupt publishing choice (we will get to that momentarily), the saga of The Maker and this five-issue series comes to an ultimately impressive end…

Ultimate Universe: Finale #1
Rating: ★☆☆☆☆
by Matt Sernaker

Official Synopsis: THE ULTIMATE GOODBYE… Following the events of ULTIMATE ENDGAME #5, the creative teams of all the Ultimate books come together one last time to say farewell…

Review: While Ultimate Endgame #5 stuck the landing, the Ultimate Universe: Finale just didn’t do it for me. For months we’ve been told this is the end of the line (hell, the synopsis for Ultimate Endgame and this title state as such), but SURPRISE(?), “The Ultimate Universe will return” is a massive slap in the face to readers. Instead of providing a true epilogue and closure, this assortment of stories from the creative teams felt like a tacked on “nevermind, we MIGHT see you soon” reading experience. On paper, this sounded like it would be a nice ending and wrap-up for some of the dangling plot threads, but that wasn’t the case in execution. I will say, despite my frustration with the elements above, the Spider-Man and Wolverine stories were good, just not right for this moment.

Wonder Woman #34
Rating: ★★★★★
by Matt Sernaker

Official Synopsis: THE BATTLE IS ONLY BEGINNING! Diana and Steve’s bittersweet reunion is cut short by the Matriarch and her plans to destroy Wonder Woman. Can Trinity save her parents and the world? You won’t want to miss the riveting conclusion of “The Wonder War” Act One!

Review: Every time I pick up a new comic from this creative team, I immediately feel like I’ve read the best issue in the run…until the next comes out and the cycle continues, because it just is that great of a narrative. As a massive Green Lantern fan, it was great to see how the Matriarch acquired and controlled her ring, and the behind the scenes challenge in doing so was extremely enlightening about the power and willpower that this new threat poses to the future DC universe. This was an edge-of-your-seat level experience from cover to cover. The face-off between Diana and the Matriarch is insanely well executed, and if I had to pick one book to read this week, Wonder Woman would easily be my recommendation.

Green Lantern #36
Rating: ★★★½☆
by Matt Sernaker

Official Synopsis: KYLE RAYNER IS ON THE CASE! What’s it like running into your ex-girlfriend, who is also a superhero and happens to be the daughter of Earth’s Green Lantern, after a few years? Well, why don’t you come along and find out as Jade returns to help, and Kyle investigates a series of murders involving several fast-food joints all around L.A.!

Review: JADE IS BACK! In a reunion we’ve waited years to see, Kyle reconnects with Jade and sparks immediately begin to fly between to two emerald heroes. While romance is in the air once again, Kyle and Odyssey have to deal with the alien threat of Dr. Skin, a red carpet debut, and an extremely odd assortment of fast-food themed threats… Yup, it’s a bit of a wacky issue, but there are some fantastic story beats that bind the whole thing together nicely. I’m loving the Kyle and Jade dynamic (stay on target Jeremy!), and it will be interesting to see if Odyssey remains a roommate or if we see more developments on a personal level between the duo.

Now, in the vein of transparency and constructive criticism, I’m really struggling with the art on this current arc and is why I scored this issue lower than I normally would. There are moments when the characters and action look phenomenal, but then we have extremely cartoonish shots that detract from the story. The lack of consistency, especially when we’ve been treated to some incredible artists over the last few years, has been bothering me for a few issues now. I hope the art can even out, because Hal and Kyle’s story as part of All In has been a true highlight for me.

Venom #259
Rating: ★★★★☆
by Matt Sernaker

Official Synopsis: VenoMJ GETS AN ALL-NEW LOOK! A face from Venom’s past is back from the dead — with a warning that could mean the end of the world! In the face of the apocalypse, who can Mary Jane Watson trust with her greatest secret? Not who you think! Meanwhile, Dylan Brock makes a decision… and the Venom family may never be the same! Plus, an all-new look for VenoMJ !

Review: MJ and Venom take their pairing to the next level with an all-new, all-different look…and I love it! I know it will likely be a temporary thing, but you have to give the creative team credit for a solid redesign. The last few issues of Venom have been consistently strong, diving into more of the character aspects after getting caught up in another crossover… Which leads us to the setup for the next event crossover. While I’m feeling event fatigue (especially with symbiotes), I really enjoyed the movement of the various plot elements in both this and the last issue. The last few pages in particular were a pleasant surprise, and I hope that the creative team can maintain the momentum while navigating the Queen in Black event.

Matt Sernaker (Editor-In-Chief) interviewed MacGyver once and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
