Blu-ray Review: Ghost Town

Ricky Gervais from the original UK version of The Office finally settled down and stopped being annoying long enough to make a movie where he doesn’t act like a complete twat (to use Brit vernacular). While his character in Ghost Town, Dr. Bertram Pincus, DDS, is like his Office character David Brent in that he’s someone who starts out as someone you would never want to be around, unlike Brent, Pincus doesn’t have to hit bottom before he acts like a human.

For those of you unfamiliar with the British Office, perhaps I’m really not describing this properly. Pincus is so antisocial that he became a dentist because it’s a job where he can shut people up by putting things in their mouths. Pincus goes in for a routine operation under general anesthetic and when he comes to, he can see and hear ghosts. He goes back to the hospital to learn what happened and it turns out that during his operation, he died for seven minutes.

And with that origin story we are off to solve the problems of the ghosts of New York. …Or are we? Pincus is haunted by recently deceased Frank (Greg Kinnear, Little Miss Sunshine) who plagues Pincus until he agrees to help with Frank’s widow Gwen (Téa Leoni, Jurassic Park III). The comedy talent goes on from the primary three stars to also include another dentist in Pincus’ suite played by Aasif Mandvi (The Daily Show, Jericho) and his surgeon who accidentally killed him on the table played by Kristen Wiig (Saturday Night Live, Knocked Up).

As absurd as the premise is for this film, it’s every bit as heartwarming and funny as it promises and is quite worth a spot on your comedy shelf, and now that you can get it in 1080p High Definition picture and 5.1 Dolby TrueHD sound, this is the perfect medium to do so.
