Blu-ray Review: Napoleon Dynamite

“Vote for Pedro. He will protect you.”

The hit 2004 comedy Napoleon Dynamite is now available on Blu-ray!

Napoleon Dynamite is the tale of a dorky high school student played by Jon Heder. Napoleon is an outcast at his school and has zero social skills. Napoleon lives with his older brother Kip (Aaron Ruell) and his grandmother. When his grandmother gets injured she asks their Uncle Rico to watch the boys until she returns. Uncle Rico enlists Kip’s aid and the two set out to sell Tupperware door to door. While at school, Napoleon befriends the new transfer student named Pedro (Efren Ramirez). In an attempt to become popular, Pedro becomes determined to run for President of the School (his main competition is Summer Wheatley played by Haylie Duff). Napoleon also finds that a girl named Deb has become interested in him and with a little help from his Uncle Rico, attempts to talk with her (and fails miserably). Napoleon helps Pedro with his campaign and the two find that they might actually have a chance at winning. Pedro makes his speech only to learn that he must produce a skit to follow…Napoleon steps in and saves the day with his own solo dance routine! At first you aren’t sure how the crowd will react but it turns out he gets a standing ovation from the students!

Overall
Napoleon Dynamite was a pretty big surprise for the comedy world in 2004. This poor kid really has to learn how to interact with people and fails miserably in the process. He really is the ultimate dork and you can’t help but hope for his eventual success. If you saw this film before everyone and their mom knew about it I feel that you would have gotten a lot out of it. For those of us who saw the film after the massive hype it definitely took a few viewings to really appreciate.

ComicsOnline gives the Blu-ray release of Napoleon Dynamite 4 out of 5 surprise comedies.
