Blu-ray Review: Donnie Darko

“Why do you wear that stupid bunny suit?”
“Why are you wearing that stupid man suit?”

Cult classic film Donnie Darko has just made its way on to Blu-ray!

For those of you who have never heard of this movie, it really is quite amazing. I was introduced to Donnie Darko during a midnight screening of the film in Santa Cruz, CA in 2003. My dormmates said they were going to see this film and summarized the story as being about “evil rabbits and time travel”. I of course went along (because really, who could refuse a story like that?).

Upon watching it I was entirely surprised at how deep the film was and how entertaining a non-linear narrative truly was. Additionally Darko had an impressive cast comprised of Jake Gyllenhaal, Drew Barrymore, Patrick Swayze, Mary McDonnell and Noah Wyle.

During your first viewing you really can’t tell if Donnie is just a messed up kid or if these events are really happening to him. Donnie has stopped taking his medication and during that time meets Frank (a guy in an evil looking rabbit suit). Frank tells Donnie that he only has 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes and 12 seconds until the world ends.

That is all I am going to tell you about the film…other than the fact that it easily makes my TOP 10 list of best films ever (and this is coming from a Film Major).
