“Darling, who is this Elle?”

Urusei Yatsura Movie 1 Only You, is about Ataru Moroboshi, who is a 17 year old high school student, but his girl friend calls him “Darling”, and his girl friend is an Alien Princess named Lum but something that happened will ruin that great relationship. 11 years ago Ataru was playing “shadow tag” with a pink haired girl named Elle. Wouldn’t you know it, Elle is another Alien Princess, and where she comes from a planet that if you step on some ones shadow, you have to get married. Now fast forward 11 years, when Ataru has forgot every thing, a pink thing is sending wedding invitations to every one Ataru knows, and some people are so shocked that they think Ataru betrayed Lum, that some of them actually want to kill him. And when Elle arrives, the battle between her and Lum for Ataru begins.

The setting in Only You is fairly modern, maybe mid 90’s, and the Earth’s technology is limited, the most you see is tanks and cars. The alien technology is heavily used, most of the movie is in outer space. Some of the alien space ships are the stereo typical flying saucer, yet other space ships are skulls. The weaponry is your basic laser guns and laser cannons, there is a small use of a metal changes, a hammer and a sonic hammer. The creepiest and most humorous technology, is the large fridge of love, Elle uses it to freeze and keep all of her hot guy lovers forever (lucky for Ataru he does not meet the requirements for being a “hot guy”).

Overview
Only You is a romantic/action/comedy, but mostly a comedy. Just about everything in this movie gets turned in to a comedy situation, even the war is funny, “Fight for the sake of love, FIGHT FOR THE SAKE OF LOVE!”. I think that this movie is incredibly funny, and with the romantic, action and most importantly the comedy makes this movie perfect for just a every body. The special features include voice tryouts that were not excepted, behind the scenes which is just watching the voices being added, meet Ataru and Lum witch is information on their voice actors, character bios of some of the characters and a picture gallery of some of the characters. “Now onward like 100,000,000 fire balls!”

Only You was the first of 6 movies made from this very popular series that ran from October 1981 to March, 1986. Urusei Yatsura is one of the most beloved Anime from the 80’s in Japan and still brings out Cosplayers at many of the large conventions. If you are not familiar with this series, you should take the time to check it out and Only You is great place to start.
