DVD Review: Flight of the Conchords: The Complete Second Season

The box has a clear outside sleave with only Bret and Jemaine on it, so you can put it on any DVD to create the illusion of New Zealanders flying over the content.

Flight of the Conchords
is one of those shows that, though many of your friends may be into it as well, still feels like it’s “your show”. The series is based around New Zealand’s comedy-folk-hip-hop duo, Flight of the Conchords, and their struggles to make it big (or play a paying gig) in New York. What sets Flight of the Conchords apart from other comedy TV shows is the plot-relevant music videos seamlessly intertwined into the story of each episode.
The second season finds Bret and Jemaine miraculously worse off than they were in the previous episodes. They go into the red financially due to splurging on a teacup, fight over girls who want nothing to do with either of them and continue to be harassed by their geographical enemies, the Australians. The second season of Flight of the Conchords doesn’t hold up to the brilliance and rewatchability of the first but is far from disappointing. The first season, and the songs that accompany it, may be hailed as classic for years to come, making it hard for the newer episodes to stay as persistently awesome.
***This is where I didn’t know exactly what to write so I made a drink and rewatched a couple episodes***

Actually, this show is totally awesome through and through. Bret and Jermaine stay entertaining through the entire course of the show with the supporting characters remaining tirelessly clever. Sure, a lot of the first season songs were better than this season, but it really is a great show and after watching the first season, you’ll hunger for more novelty folk songs written by uncomfortable, innocent foreigners struggling to get by in the shadiness of New York.
Extras:
The bonus features on the set are great, despite lacking potentially hilarious commentary. They include the standard deleted scenes and outtakes as well as a documentary about the origins of the Flight of the Conchords TV series. The New Zealand Consulate Meetings with Murray & Greg featurette shows what life is like in the day job of the Conchords’ manager, Murray Hewitt, in the rare occasions that he isn’t holding a band meeting on the company dime. The highlight of the bonus features is Dave’s Pawn Shop Commercials which feature the Conchords’ friend Dave rapping in low budget commercials for his family-owned pawn shop.
Overall:
I say buy it. When it comes to your DVD collection, nothing beats having box sets of shows that can be watched again and again. In fact, buy the first season too. Also, see them in concert when they come to a town near you. (This is the first time in my ComicsOnline career that I have flat-out said to buy something without any qualifications.)

ComicsOnline gives Flight of the Conchords: The Complete Second Season 4.5 out of 5 incorrect pronunciations of the letter “E”.
