DVD Review: Ghost Hunt: The Complete Series

Ghost Hunt: The Complete Series
is a frightfully exciting anime mystery series.  Kazuya Shibuya owns a Paranormal Research business. The only thing is… he's only 17.  Mai Taniyama accidentally breaks a piece of Kazuya's equipment and ends up working for him.

Highlights

Mai Taniyama is on her way to school when she notices some people inside the old abandoned school building.  She decides to check it out. After all, she had heard that the building was haunted.  While inside the building, a serious accident takes place.  Lin Koujo, Kazuya's assistant, saves Mai from certain death, but he is injured instead, and an expensive camera is damaged as well.  Without an assistant and with no way for Mai to possibly pay Kazuya back for the camera, an agreement is made that Mai will work for Kazuya until she pays him off.  With this case so involved with her school, Mai almost instantly became intrigued by the occupation of ghost hunting.

After the case is solved and Mai is technically done working for Kazuya (as Lin has recovered from his injuries), Mai is kind of sad that she probably won't get to work with ghosts again. Lucky her, Kazuya calls her during school and ask her to continue to work for Shibuya Psychic Research (SPR).  Of course Mai takes the job with all her heart! In the anime, there are seven different cases, each one taking about 2-4 episodes

Overall

I didn't know what to expect when I started this series.  It could have been like Ghost Hunters, where they go to different locations and look for evidence of ghosts, or the complete opposite, similar to Big Man Japan, where they would have to fight off ghosts in an epic battle.  It turned out to be a bit of both. The ghosts were definitely there, but they didn't know what kind of ghost, why the haunting is going on, and what they need to do to stop it.  I love this plot. It was absolutely amazing how they kept coming up with different cases that didn't repeat ideas.  There was suspense, action, mystery, and twists and turns all over the place that just kept you wanting more.

The characters were decent. A couple of them had unexplained aspects of their personalities, but I felt like there was much more room for them to develop into something excellent.  Lin was the most ambiguous of all the characters.  There were some things that came up about him, and things that you were guessing at, but more than half of the time, none of those suspicions and hypotheses were cleared up, which was annoying.

My favorite arc is Case Six: "Bloodstained Labyrinth".  This is the first case where someone actually dies during the case.  This case is just so exciting and it draws you in completely.  It's about a HUGE mansion that is owned by the Ex-Prime Minister. Several people have gone missing in that mansion, leaving no trace behind.  Three exorcist teams have been invited to solve the case, including SPR.  After three days there is not much evidence, except a strange dream, a ceremony that results in a very odd outcome, and the disappearance of two of the assistants of the other two groups.  It turns out that the thing they are up against was more then they ever expected.  I couldn't stop watching, and after it was over, I went straight to the next case, hoping it was at least as good as this one.

I have to recommend this series to anyone over 14 who can take creepy things.  This isn't exclusive to Anime fans, but to everyone! I personally enjoy ghost and softer horror stories, and this series did a great job of combining reality and fiction in 25 episodes. There isn't too much gore, or anything too terrifying, it's just right!

ComicsOnline gives Ghost Hunt: The Complete Series 4.5 out of 5 unusual rooms in the ex-prime minister's mansion.
