DVD Review: Primeval Volume 2

What happens when you take dinosaurs, time travel and evil creatures from the future and put them together? You get Volume 2 of Primeval, which is now available on DVD!

Dr. Nick Cutter continues to lead his elite team on a mission to stop various creatures from coming through the anomalies in time and space. New teammates Captain Becker and Sarah Page join the team after the death of Cutter's Assistant, Stephen Hart. Cutter makes a new breakthrough regarding the anomalies and believes that they are all connected and that they can be predicted. His ex-wife Helen, also makes a discovery of her own with a mysterious artifact from the future that has a strange connection to the anomalies.

Episode Highlights:
Episode 1- Cutter and his team investigate an anomaly that opens inside a London Museum. The anomaly unleashes a creature that looks extremely similar to the Egyptian God known as Ammut, but turns out to be a Pristichampus. With the help of Egyptologist Sarah Page, Cutter and his team must return the creature home before it kills. Back at the home office, Lester deals with a new player named Christine Johnson, who knows a bit too much about the A.R.C. Center and the work that the team is doing. Will she be friend or foe?

Episode 2- 14 years ago, an anomaly opened inside a residental home and unleashed a gremlin from the future upon three unsuspecting boys, only one of whom was able to escape. Cut to the present, where Nick predicts a new anomaly will open in the same location shortly, and the team is dispatched to investigate. The child that escaped all those years ago finally returns as Police Officer Danny Quinn, who is still searching for answers about his murdered brother. Meanwhile back at the A.R.C., Helen and the Cleaner (aka the Clone Guy) infiltrate the building in search for Nick Cutter's DNA.

Episode 3- Nick Cutter is acting very strange and attempts to take the Artifact, but it is revealed that he is actually a clone being controled by Helen! Now Helen and Nick have a final confrontation and only one of them will be walking away!

Episode 9- A mysterious woman from the future may hold the key to learning more about the anomalies, but the only problem is that she is being held by Christine Johnson. Danny attempts to rescue her, only to learn that she is actually Helen in disguise! Helen escapes and takes Johnson with her into the future, where Johnson is abandoned only to be killed by the future predators.

Episode 10- It all comes down to this: the final face off between Helen Cutter and the team from the A.R.C. Helen is determined to stop the original evolution of humanity and disrupt the timeline forever! Can Danny, Abbey and Connor stop her before it is too late?

Overall:
This series continued to impress and really became addictive to watch. I looked forward to watching new episodes each week and was very happy with the level of detail given to this season. It is unfortunate however to learn that ITV and BBC have cancelled the show, thus leaving the characters and their fate up a tree, quite literally. Remember how frustrating it was watching Rembrant Brown jump into the portal at the end of Season 5 of Sliders and not knowing his fate? Or the fate of the remaining Sliders? Yeah…it's that bad. So what will happen to our heroes? Well there has been a lot of talk of a US made Primeval Movie. With the show canceled, it is unknown if a big budget version will still happen, but we do know that it will not be a continuation of the current storyline. If you are looking for a good show to watch, this one is right up there as being of the best of 2009…even if it doesn't have a proper ending.

ComicsOnline gives Primeval Volume Two – 4.5 out of 5 shows that I will really miss watching and hope that there is some chance in hell that it gets a proper finale. (Hey, it worked for Farscape and SG-1, maybe it can work for Primeval). Thanks for the ride guys.

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
