Manga Review: KimiKiss Vol. 2

KimiKiss Volume 2, is a one shot love story that follows the gradual relationship between Kouichi and Asuka.  Kouichi has been noticing that there are a lot of couples around school lately.  Almost everyone around him is in some sort of relationship, except for him.  That's when he gets hit in the head with a soccer ball of love, which is kicked by the smokin' Asuka.

Highlights

It's time for school to start, and Kouichi is looking for his true love (hopefully).  Asuka is the do-it-all sports girl.  She was practicing her most favorite sport, soccer, when Kouichi got in the way of her ball.  It just so happens that Kouichi is pretty good at soccer himself.  Asuka asks Kouichi to help her train so she can develop her new technique, the Asuka Turn!

Continuing with creative titles, Asuka eventually opens up to Kouichi, a little, and she asks him to be her "Love Coach" as well.  Of course Kouichi agrees, and they go on their first "activity" together (that doesn't necessarily involve soccer).  Not surprisingly, this Love Coach position quickly evolves into a boyfriend position.

Overall

Apart from the almost overwhelming cheesiness, there was a good plot.  I like how when Asuka opened up to Kouichi, she didn't just kinda do it, she told a troublesome secret to him!  This secret added more depth to the story, which it needed.  There wasn't much about the characters to discover, it seemed to me that there wasn't much thought to secondary characters as well, there were hardly any in it.  For being a short story, I understand the author trying not to make it too complicated, but I think they were too conscious of that.

The action scenes were pretty cool.  I played soccer when I was younger, but I never really found it to be much fun, but in this manga, I thought I missed something when I played!  It was interesting to see how Japan looks at Girls Soccer, and the lack thereof.  The author talks about how this series is supposed to be one about "heroines",  but I didn't really see it in this volume, Asuka was too much of a one-minded lemon for me to relate to her as a girl.

Overall, I thought it was pretty good for a one-shot story.  It would have been more interesting if it was longer, maybe a six volume manga.  It was overly cheesy and there were some moments when I was almost disgusted by the constant sexual hints, but, it's for older teens, so I expected as much.  Also, without changing the character's personas, it would make for a better "wimpy guy get the strong, popular girl" story, and not "kind of wimpy guy gets the not so popular girl who only really cares about soccer".

I would suggest this to anyone who isn't so popular, over the age of 14, and who likes cheesy romantic comedy stories. You really have to look deep to find the real story and the overall plot, which I found the most entertaining.
