Manga Review: One Piece: Volume 23, Vivi’s Adventure

Alabasta is in danger. With the Kingdom in a bitter war against the rebels, there is no one in the way to prevent Sir Crocodile Baroque Works from accomplishing their evil plans. As the battle against the soldiers and the rebels rage, Crocodile’s men, Mr. 7 and Ms. Father’s Day, are planning to launch a bomb into the middle of the fighting. That bomb might stop the fighting but it would kill every one, even civilians. The only thing that the Straw Hat Crew can do is stop the bomb, but with the bomb at the top of the clocktower and less than one minute until it goes off, there is almost no hope.

Highlights

The way that the Straw Hat Crew gets to the top of the tower is very creative. They jump, but not your normal type of jump. First they have Princess Vivi sitting on Chopper in his reindeer form, with Chopper  standing on Usopp’s back. Now the way that they get airborn is when Nami uses her Cyclone Tempo and blasts the trio high into the sky. As the propulsion of the Cyclone Tempo ends, Chopper jumps up as as hard as he can. Luckily, earlier Sanji and Zolo were looking for the bomb and found themselves on the higher levels of the clock tower. So as Chopper's power ends, Sanji kicks Chopper and Vivi up to Zolo and he throws them up with the dull side of his swords. Finally, Chopper changes into his human form and throws Vivi into the top of the clocktower.

Overall

This is the end of this One Piece arc, and as usual it doesn't disappoint. Although at this point most of the best battles have already happened, there is still the fight between Luffy and Sir Crocodile, which is quite epic. It also gets pretty intense at points, and to stop the intensity from being overwhelming between chapters there is  “Hachi’s Walk on the Seafloor”, which tells the story of one of the Straw Hat Crew’s enemies, Hachi, an octopus fish-man, and it is just a picture and a sentient. The Other thing that is between chapters is “Question Corner SBS”, which is a Q and A,the  questions that are asked are like, "What’s the difference between an octopus fish-man and an octopus merman?” or “What would Mr. 7 look like if he was Mr. 6?” All in all this is an important part of the One Piece story and no one should miss it.
