Blu-ray Review: Love Actually

Love Actually is a film about… well, love.  More importantly is how love is defined by many different people.  Love Actually follows the stories of several individuals as they search, discover, and escape love.  All of them are very entertaining and all intertwine throughout.  With a cast containing a who’s who of British actors, Love Actually is a great romantic comedy that has a little something for every type of viewer.

Highlights

Of the separate stories in Love Actually, I found the one with Colin Firth and Lucia Moniz most interesting.  The idea that a guy would go through the trouble of learning an entire language so he could speak with the woman he loves really appealed to my soft side.  The evolution of Hugh Grant’s character and his scene with Billy Bob Thornton is amazing.  Also notable is the chemistry between Liam Neeson’s character and his son Thomas Sangster.

Special Features

Love Actuallyon Blu-ray comes as a single disc edition with a small amount of special features.  Included here are additional deleted scenes, The Music of Love Actually feature, commentary track, Kelly Clarkson “The Trouble with Love Is” Music Video, and new to the Blu-ray release is a the Storytellers featurette and Billy Mack “Christmas is All Around” Music Video.  All of it can be watched in less than an hour. The transfer here is solid and the sound good, but this isn’t the type of movie that really shows off Blu-ray capabilities.  At least Keira Knightley is still hot in high-def.

Generally commentary tracks can be distracting, but I’m a huge fan of this movie and I found this one incredibly enjoyable.  Director Richard Curtis does a great job of interjecting little side notes about how he came up with ideas, how he shot a particular scene, or how much he appreciated an actor’s work in the film.  Most notable In particular is during the wedding scene with Keira Knightley and Chiwetel Ejiofor where he describes in detail how Jim Henson’s funeral gave him the idea for the singing. The other actors involved are Hugh Grant, Bill Nighy, and Thomas Sangster which are very interesting to listen to with their heavy British accents. Hearing each of them constantly make fun of Colin Firth is hilarious.

The Music of Love Actually feature is a very short piece on how Richard Curtis was heavily influenced by Joni Mitchell and how he picked the songs for the soundtrack. The deleted scenes are short, but the extra scenes with Emma Thompson’s character and her son are particularly hilarious.  The seeing farts scene is incredible! Those buying the BD edition for the two extra special features will be disappointed.  The Storytellers feature is less than ten minutes long and contains a few small interviews with some of the cast members.  The Billy Mack music video is laughably bad lyrically and visually, but seeing Bill Nighy dance around like a total idiot is worth a look just because it’s Bill Nighy dancing around like a total idiot.

Overview

Love actuallyisn’t the type of film that excels on Sony Blu-ray.  There’s no real use of special effects or need for incredible sound.  What you will find here is an amazing movie that contains an A list cast.  If you’ve somehow missed this movie before or you’re a high-def buff who has to have it all on Blu, then Love Actually on Blu-ray should be part of your collection.  If you’ve seen this many times and the standard version is already on your shelf, you might want to pass on this one.
