DVD Review: Drawn Together: The Complete Series: Party in Your Box

Back in the early 2000s, reality television was a booming industry. Most Television programming centered around banal shows where people competed against people for fame and fortune. They were cheap to produce and easy to cast compared to other types of television programming. Comedy Central decided to join the movement, but with a twist. Drawn Together became the first animated reality show, debuting at Comic-Con and premiering on TV soon after.

By the time Drawn Together had reached its third season, the producers and writers were pushing to top each previous episode to see what they could get away with The legacy it left behind was a program of low brow humor, offensive content and debauchery. It was pretty darn funny. Drawn Together is a parody of all the reality shows of the time, and the major archetypes of cartoons at the time. The show revolves around eight characters placed in a house in a manner similar to The Surreal Life or The Real World. Each of the eight characters was an archetype of cartoons:

• Princess Clara: A parody of Disney princesses.
• Wooldoor Jebediah Sockbat: A parody of children's show characters in the style of Spongebob Squarepants
• Foxxy Love: A ghetto-ized parody of Valerie Brown from Josie and the Pussycats
• Toot Braunstein: An overweight and alcoholic parody of Betty Boop.
• Ling-Ling: A parody of Pikachu.
• Xandir P. Wifflebottom: A parody of Link from The Legend of Zelda series who seems to be homosexual.
• Spanky Ham: A parody of Flash cartoon characters from the internet.
• Captain Leslie Hero: A parody of Superman who happens to be chauvinistic, perverted, lecherous, and a repressed bisexual.

Since this is the entire series of Drawn Together there is a wealth of special features presented here. All three of the boxed season sets are collected together, so there are all of the special features from those, and new ones produces exclusively for this set.

Drawn Together was dirty, used toilet humor, and threw sex and alcohol around like it was acceptable to do so. And yet it was pretty darn funny to see our modern cartoons, legends of cartoons, and heroes act in such manners. Now this show isn’t for everyone, but people who aren’t easily offended will love it. Drawn Together is the kind of late night humor in the ranks of South Park that Comedy Central is known for. It fit in their line-up perfectly, and if you like black humor mixed with raunchy comedy, then Drawn Together: The Complete Series: Party in Your Boxwill fit in your DVD collection perfectly.

Comics Online gives Drawn Together: The Complete Series: Party in Your Box 3.5 out of 5 drunk cartoon legends
