Manga Review: V.B. Rose Volume 7

Set in the perfect location for a Shojo, a bridal shop, V.B. Rose Volume 7 could be considered a classic. The story centers around Ariska and Ageha.  Ariska is the bridal shop owner and designer, and Ageha is a high school girl who works with him part time.

This time around, old romance and new ones close by intrude on the “friends”.

Highlights

The story opens during a shared birthday party between Ageha and Arisaka. It seems romance is about to happen, they both feel the night is special. It’s fireworks.

But, it’s not that kind of fireworks, it’s the regular, pretty in the sky type.  There are some tender moments between the two, and the whole night leaves Ageha happy, yet full of questions. She turns to her classmates to help her try to figure it out.  Back at the Bridal shop, Arisaka’s partner, Mitsuya has it figured out.  He hints around and has fun with it, yet Arisaka is still clueless.

Then comes in Kana, she s a real trip, embodying extreme surliness. She is also Arisaka’s ex-girlfriend. The pot is stirred up again.

Ageha and Arisaka think too much. He struggles in wanting to tell her his feelings and busy thoughts always fill her head. Still, neither speaks up, and you never know when it will be too late. To Ageha’s surprise, the brother of her close friend lets her known that he has romantic feeling for her.  This really sets her thoughts swirling.  And… it leaves off right there, a cliff hanger.

Overall

If there is a formula for the perfect Shojo this may be it,  a cute, bubbly girl, two older guys, fashion AND a bridal shop. The fashion woven into the manga is a wonderful addition, many of the outfits are great, some of the designs are beautiful (like the wedding dress). Hidaka talks about this in the bonus material, which is about the author herself, and it makes me feel more connected, like the Manga is something shared between friends.

Ageha is a bit annoying the way she jumps to conclusions a lot, and bounces from thought to thought.  But still, she is fun and charming and a reader can’t help but cheer her on.

This is a fine addition to any Shojo collection.  In my opinion, the artistry of the images adds to its value and success.
