Blu-ray Review: Battlestar Galactica- Season One

The Cylons are coming! The Cylons are coming! They're here.

Battlestar Galactica: Season One
has made its way to Blu-ray, and it is
truly glorious. This is a show that was meant to be watched in high
definition. It is amazing how different the episodes look compared to DVD. I need to start out by mentioning that I do indeed own all of BSG on DVD. It was a series that I felt needed to have in my collection and I wanted to relive it before the final season aired. Now that this Blu-ray set is in my hands, I have the desire to own it all on Blu-ray.

BSG in a nutshell:

Mankind builds Robot slaves called Cylons. Cylons serve mankind for years. Cylons become self aware. Cylons fight back against mankind. Cylons blowup mankind. Humans abandon home-worlds and set out into the universe to find a new home, a place called "Earth". Cylons follow mankind into space to destroy the last remains of humanity…and some of the Cylons actually look like humans and are aboard the human fleet…but don't know they are Cylons! That's pretty much all you need to know.

Whats in this set:
Mini-Series Parts 1 and 2-

-The original 4 hour pilot for BSG. See how the Cylons destroyed the human colonies and forced their creators out into space. We also learn that some of the Cylons have taken human form in 12 different humanoid models. Who can we trust when the enemy looks like us?

All 13 episodes of Season One

Episode Highlights include:
-"33": With the Cylons on their trail, Commander Adama and his crew must continuously "jump" every 33 minutes, which is when the Cylons keep reappearing. This episode really help set the tone of the season and demonstrated how desperate this battle had become.
-"Litmus": A humanoid Cylon makes a suicide bombing attempt on Galactica and Adama has an independent tribunal investigate the crew. This episode features some great moments on Caprica with Helo and Boomer as well, setting up major developments with their relationship.
-"Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down": Ellen Tigh is found within the fleet, and people start to wonder if she is a Cylon…We get a lot of insight into the Col. Tigh's relationship with Ellen as she introduces an interesting new dynamic to life on the Galactica.
-"Kobol's Last Gleaming" (Parts 1 and 2)- The Colonial Fleet discovers the planet Kobol, believed to be the origin of the human race. President Roslin takes this to be a sign towards Earth, but Adama believes differently. Roslin makes a request of Starbuck to return to Caprica to retrieve "The Arrow of Apollo" to help lead the way to Earth. This action causes Adama to force his hand and lead a military coup, thus relieving the President of her duties. But the biggest surprise comes out of nowhere and establishes that anything can happen on this show.

Blu-ray Special Features:

U-Control
-The Oracle
-Picture In Picture
-Blu-ray Live BSG Trivia Challenge

Additional Features:
-Deleted Scenes
-Behind the Scenes Featurettes
-Sketches and Art- Ever wonder what was going on in the creator's heads when they were desiging the show? Check out some of this incredible art.
-Audio Commentaries- I have had the opportunity to listen to a lot of audio commentaries over the years, and I think that the BSG commentaries are some of my favorite. There is a lot of thought that goes into these episodes and getting to hear more of the first hand experience about the project is incredibly interesting.
-Are you a Cylon? Personality Quiz- I just found out that I am a Cylon…Didn't see that coming.

Overall:
One of the best shows ever made has just gotten better. I know, I didn't think it was possible but it has happened. If you own it on DVD, give the DVD to your friend and go and buy it on Blu-ray. It really is worth the money.

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
