DVD Review: Saw VI Directors Cut

“Don’t trust the one who saves you

Strange words to be said in a movie, unless that movie is in the Saw franchise. Saw VI is as cryptic and mystifying as ever, but the series is beginning to make sense as questions are answered from as far back as Saw III.

Saw VI, the latest from the most confusing of franchises, answers some questions from as far back as Saw III, but for every solution there’s another query posed. The story of John Kramer/Jigsaw (Tobin Bell – Saw I – VI) death and master plan is told through a series of flashbacks. Why did Amanda (Shawnee Smith – The Blob) kill the doctor in Saw III? Why did Detective Strahm get dealt a crushing blow in Saw V? Is Detective Hoffman (Costas Mandylor – Beowulf) the successor to the Jigsaw throne? Who is William Easton and why is he in a game?
William Easton (Peter Outerbridge – Land of the Dead) is a health insurance claims adjustor who has forsaken the sanctity of health for the sake of the bottom line. His sins are being judged by his willingness to judge his staffs’ merits. But is that all there is to this game, or are there more players?

To be honest I thought that the Saw series had run its course with the release of Saw IV. The movie made little sense other than to use some more intricate gadgets and timing to teach someone a lesson. And the plot seemed confused and convoluted, but as it turns out, for a reason. Saw V and Saw VI further the story of John/Jigsaw’s master plan, and his search for his heir apparent.

Saw VI is perfect addition to the Saw franchise when it’s looked at in the big picture. The series is much like a Quentin Tarentino movie with events happening out of order, in flashbacks and real time, but ultimately making sense. I think the most horrifying aspect of these movies is, what would I do if I had to make choices that involved other people’s lives? The interesting (I’d say cool, but I don’t want people to think I’m strange) implements of torture don’t hurt the story either. I'd like to mention the fine job of Tanedra Howard ,Winner of the VH1reality show Scream Queen, whose prize was a part in Saw VI. Due to the graphic nature of the emotional and physical violence, this movie may not be for everyone, but it’s for me.

ComicsOnline gives Saw VI 4 implements of torture out of 5.
