Blu-ray Review: Valentine’s Day

Love. We are all looking for it, and when we find it, we cling to it as if we'll never get it again. We lavish those who provide it to us with gifts and time. There are those of us who devote more energy to the pursuit and care of Love than others. But, there is one thing universal to all of us whether or not we have found that love and that is Valentine’s Day. You either love it because you have someone, or hate it because you’re single. You can’t escape it, or even the fact that the day is coming up. Hollywood has cashed in on the day and made a movie about it, but this time they have decided to make it with an all star ensemble cast and now you can own Valentine's Day  on Blu-ray!

Highlights

Valentine's Day follows one day in the lives and relationships of twenty people. The plot winds through break-ups, make-ups, young love, and timeless relationships. The film spends the day going from couple to couple and person to person linking each story by chance meetings, coincidental places in which certain characters find themselves, and even how two other seemingly unrelated characters are actually in a relationship as well. Valentine’s Day mostly revolves around the relationships of one Reed Bennett, played by Ashton Kutcher. His day begins when he proposes to his girlfriend Morley (Jessica Alba), who accepts the ring. After arriving at work, he announces to the employees and customers of his shop that he is getting married. His friend Julia (the beautiful Jennifer Garner) also shows up at his work and he announces the engagement to her as well.

After she leaves, one of the customers of the flower shop turns out to be Julia’s boyfriend, Dr. Harrison Copeland (played by Patrick Dempsey).  He comes into the shop to order flowers for both Julia and his wife. Later, during deliveries, Reed returns to his house to leave a special flower for his new fiancée, and she breaks it to him that she is leaving him. His friends tell him that they weren't surprised by Morley leaving him. Due to this, Reed becomes determined to tell Julia about Dr. Copeland's wife, to save her of the pain of finding out.

It seems that for the first third of the movie there are too many story lines to deal with. While introducing each set of people, there is a lot of jumping around. Once that is completed, the pacing of the movie and the transitions between the couples switch to a slower, more unaffected tone that seems natural to the storytelling of the movie. This makes it a little hard to get into the film, since it keeps the viewers from connecting to any one character at first, but it's worth the time taken to watch this part. From here forward, the movie gets better, and rewards the viewer with unfolding relationships and the little ways that everyone in the cast is related to each other's lives.

Overall

Valentine's Day is an enjoyable film to watch. The wealth of stories should keep even the pickiest person interested. It reads like Love Actually in the fact that we have so many interwoven stories during a holiday.  This movie will please the fans of romantic comedies, especially those of you who happen to be fans of Love Actually.
