Comic Book Review: Star Trek: The Motion Picture – Echoes #2

by Matt Sernaker, Managing Editor

The crew of the USS Enterprise continues their search for the mysterious criminal known as Akris in Star Trek: The Motion Picture – Echoes #2! The end of the surprising first issue saw the alternate universe version of Chekov crossing into Romulan Space. Since a Federation ship can’t enter their territory without starting another interstellar war, it will be up to Captain Kirk and the rest of the crew to find a solution to their latest challenge.

Creative Team:
Writer: Marc Guggenheim
Artist: Oleg Chudakov
Colorist: DC Alonso
Lettering: Jeff Eckleberry

The parallel universe version of Uhura isn’t thrilled that Akris (alternate Chekov) is getting away. Despite the Federation Treaty and the impact that it would have on the quadrant, she wishes to pursue this vile war criminal and stop the deadly weapon known as the “Nightbringer” from being used again. Kirk quickly realizes that there is a solution to their problem, and that is for Uhura to “take him and Commander Sulu as hostages.” Our version of Uhura and Chekov also go along for the ride, and everything starts going according to plan. Kirk definiately knows how his enemy thinks, and the crew cleverly works their way to the desired Romulan station. The plan gets derailed when Alternate Uhura sees Akris, and that off-script moment allows the Romulans to gain the upper hand…

While the first issue did a lot of story setup, this issue featured a lot of action as the story quickly kicks into high gear. Guggenheim’s pacing was spot on and couldn’t have been any better if he tried. The dialogue between Alternate Uhura and Kirk on the bridge was a highlight, leading to the kidnapping plan and pursuit of Akris. Spock’s aversion to dancing was truly the best line in the issue, and I dare you not to laugh out loud at this discussion. I also appreciated the commentary on this era’s Starfleet uniform, as it will surely resonate with the fans. The art continues to be equally as impressive, as Chudakov’s character designs for the TMP era are filled with nuance and flair. Alonso’s color choices compliment this vibrant era, expertly adding depth to the TMP adventure.

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
