Comic Book Review: Star Trek #9

by Matt Sernaker, Managing Editor

The trial of Benjamin Sisko continues in Star Trek #9 from IDW Publishing! With the verdict nearly determined, our favorite Emissary attempts to come to terms with his impending fate. Meanwhile, the crew of the Theseus are in the fight for their lives as the Red Path’s latest Cardassian recruits stand between them and their goal: the Bajoran Orb of Destruction!

Creative Team:

Despite the amazing testimony on his behalf, it seems that the Captain’s trial on Cardassia Prime will not end in his favor. While mentally preparing for the impending results, he receives a visit from his old friend Gul Dukat, who reminds him that the Prophets sent him here for a reason. The story then shifts back to the Cardassian outpost, which is being held by members of the Red Path. As the mission gets progressively more challenging, the away team is aided by Lieutenant Deschenni and her amazing backup. With the Orb nearly in their hands, Lily Sato steals the final scenes as she stands her ground and displays her unique skills. Just when it seems like things are turning to their favor, an armada of ships surround the station and the Theseus…

There were so many standout moments in this issue, but the insane amount of joy that Lt. Shaxs is having throughout the battle was truly incredible. Enthusiasm is infectious, and the energy from the writers and the characters comes through wonderfully with each and every page turn. I also loved Lily’s continued character growth, putting the excited Bajoran in his place as she expertly does her job. Lieutenant Descheeni as the crew’s “cavalry” was equally as impressive, leading to an engaging discussion with Commander Data and a memorable entrance on the station. The Red Path continues to get more and more dangerous with each passing issue, and I am excited (yet scared) to see what the creative teams for Star Trek & Star Trek: Defiant have in store for readers with the upcoming release of Day of Blood

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
