TV Review: Smallville – “Lazarus”

Smallville returns for it's 10th and final season this Friday at 8pm on the CW! During the 9th Season Finale, Clark had to face off against Major Zod with the fate of the Earth hanging in the balance. Clark was prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice and activated the Kryptonian device known as the "Book of Rao," sending the Kandorians to a new world. After activating the device, Clark was attacked by Zod. While the final battle ensued, Clark allowed himself to be stabbed with a blue kryptonite blade, which removed his powers and allowed him to remain on Earth. The final moments of the season featured Clark, now powerless, plunging to an impending doom. What will become of Kal-El?

Opening seconds after the 9th Season Finale, "Lazarus" brings Smallville back at the top of it's game!

Clark manages to survive his fall (you really think he wouldn't) with a little help from a friend. Then the future man of steel has a near death experience and an encounter with Jor-El, who warns him once again that his greatest challenge is yet to come. Lex Luthor will still be Clark's greatest rival and Clark must also prepare to face a great evil. After awakening from his fall, Clark speeds off to find Chloe and goes on a quest to find any remaining ties to Lex left after his death (at the end of Season 7).

At the end of Season 9, we saw Chloe and Oliver profess their love for each other while Oliver Queen was dragged away by an unknown force screaming "Chloe, they aren't Kandorian!". What is the fate of Green Arrow? As the season begins, Chloe must embark on a journey of discovery to find Oliver with help from the Helmet of Doctor Fate! Can Chloe find a way to save Oliver from his unknown captors?

Tess also reappears after being seriously burned by Zod in the Season 9 Finale, only to find that she has been completely healed. Who was the Granny who was outside of her hospital room? How did she end up at Cadmus Labs? Tess quickly learns that Lex left a fail-safe behind in case he was injured, and that a modified (non-Michael Rosenbaum) clone has been released upon the world! Not only is he an older version of the Lex that we know and love, but he also has all of Lex's memories, including Clark's secrets. Now Clark must race against the clock to stop an evil plot put into motion by this Lex clone. Can Clark save the day and the woman he loves?

This is the season we have been waiting for. After watching this episode, it is clear that Clark's journey to become the hero he was destined to be is almost at an end. Clark must embrace his destiny as the savior of humanity and will soon dawn his iconic costume. "Lazarus" is one of the strongest openings the show has had in years. Fans have been waiting for years for the return of Lex Luthor, and while it isn't Michael Rosenbaum making an appearance in this specific episode, the potential for his return is still strong.

The last few seasons have also featured an overarching story focusing on classic Superman villains including Zod, Brainiac, and Doomsday. With this season labeled as the final round of episodes for Smallville, the minds behind the show have decided to incorporate the mythology of Darkseid and the New Gods into the show. Clark must be prepared to face off against the ultimate evil, and if this episode is any indication, viewers are in for a treat.

Official Episode Description from The CW:
JOHN SCHNEIDER REPRISES HIS ROLE AS JONATHAN KENT IN THE FINAL SEASON OF SMALLVILLE – The season premiere picks up where the finale left off. Lois finds Clark’s lifeless body and removes the blue kryptonite enabling him to heal himself. Lois sneaks away before Clark fully awakens in order to protect his secret. Chloe is desperate to find Oliver, so she turns to an unlikely source for answers. Jonathan returns to the Kent Farm with a message for Clark, and Tess awakens in a LuthorCorp lab.

ComicsOnline gives Smallville Season 10 – "Lazarus" 5 out of 5 hopes that Michael Rosenbaum will return as Lex Luthor.
