Blu-ray Review: Wolverine and X-Men: The Complete Series

TO ME MY XMEN!

When the future of mankind and mutant-kind are at stake there is only one team that can save the day: Wolverine and The XMen! Wolverine brings together an elite team of XMen consisting of Cyclops, Storm, Beast, Iceman, Rogue, Emma Frost and Nightcrawler to face off against their deadliest threat: The Sentinels. Can our favorite mutant heroes find a way to help Professor X and stop the dystopian future ruled by the Sentinels from ever happening? Now you can own the Complete Series of Wolverine and The XMen on Blu-ray!

Episode Highlights:
Wolverine vs the Hulk”: This episode is a direct sequel to Hulk Vs, and once again Nick Fury asks Wolverine for help in dealing with the Hulk “problem”. Wolverine and the Hulk must face off against the mystical creature known as a Wendigo.

“Future X“: Professor X has been captured by Future Sentinels and now he must help a band of mutants escape from a future camp. With the help of his new band of XMen, the Professor must retrieve Cerebro before the Sentinels can use the technology against mutant-kind and destroy them once and for all. This episode features many cameos including: Bishop, Hellion, Marrow, Berserker, Vanisher, Domino and more! While the Professor fights against the Sentinels in the future, Wolverine desperately searches for information on the Sentinel’s Master Mold in the past. Can he find any information before it is too late?

“Badlands”: This episode focuses on Professor X‘s new team of XMen. He and his team are on the run from a newly formed version of the Sentinels that seem to possess attributes similar to Wolverine.  Now they must escape to a mysterious area called “The Badlands” where even the Sentinels fear to tread. They eventually encounter Polaris, daughter of Magneto, who has become severely traumatized by the destruction of Genosha years before. Can Polaris help Professor X or has her mental stress caused too much damage?

“eXcessive Force”: Cyclops believes that Mr. Sinister (voiced by Justice League Unlimited’s Clancy Brown) might have information regarding the whereabouts of the still missing Jean Grey and sets out to find him. Can he fight his way through an army of Multiple Men and the Marauders? And what secret will be revealed about the fate of Jean? This episode features cameos by Multiple Man, Mr. Sinister and the Marauders.

“Foresight”: The 3-part series finale begins with Logan tracking the recently re-kidnapped Jean Grey. As he follows the kidnapper’s scent, he begins to unravel some of the secrets held by Emma Frost. Frost plays innocent, but is actually complicit in the kidnapping. As the White Queen of the Hellfire club, she is determined to extract the powerful Phoenix force that had implanted itself in Jean Grey’s mind. Meanwhile, The Scarlet Witch discovers that Magneto has started calling some of his disgraced followers back to the island of Genosha in anticipation of a new attack on America, in a ploy to start another race war. The action builds from there as the XMen are torn between saving Jean, stopping Magneto, and preventing the humans from hunting mutants to extinction, and soon all of the elements combine into an action sequence reminiscent to the human/mutant turmoil long hinted at in the show’s opening sequence. Throughout the episodes, the actions frequently cut to the future, where Charles Xavier is helping a band of mutant rebels escape from an omnipresent government determined to wipe out mutant-kind once and for all, all while he attempts to contact Wolverine to get him to prevent this horrible, dystopian future from happening.

Overall:

The XMen are back and this time we finally get to see a larger portion of the XMen Universe. The overarching story of saving the future from the Sentinels has really gone a long way to make this series stand out from its predecessors. It is incredibly fun to watch this show and try and find all of the cameos that have been thrown in. But the best part is, that these cameos are not forced. They are handled beautifully and they actually make a lot of sense.

The team behind Wolverine and the XMen has proven that they can take classic XMen storylines and adapt them to a modern setting. The continuing effort to stop the future from Days of Future’s Past has been an exciting tale. The ever increasing number of cameos in the series helps to maintain an exciting element of surprise within each episode.

The action-packed finale to Wolverine and the XMen does an excellent job of wrapping up the season, and is sure to please fans of the series. It provides some of the best animated XMen action in years, and fans of previous XMen series shouldn’t hesitate to check out Wolverine and the XMen whenever they can. It is unfortunate that we will not be granted any future seasons of this fantastic show, as funding issues lead to its demise.
